Balancing your checkbook

Currently I use my old Quicken 2006 to "keep up with things."

I also usually visit my financial institution's website to cross-check such things that are automatically posted to my check account.

It seems to work for me so far. So far, none of Salty's NY-state-based "collection agents" have visited me.

Oh,......wait a minute,.......some large-framed person (apparently a travelling violinist) is at my door.

Yes, my wife does because she wants to know how are acc'ts are doing.

 

I balance it as best I can.

 

My wife is a forensic accountant, so I'm not allowed near our checkbook.

She balances to the penny and keeps meticulous records of everything.

 

Why on earth wouldn't you? If you don't balance it to the penny, that means you don't care about a digit being off. And if you don't care, then it's easy for the WRONG digit to be off. It's not always the digit that comes after the period. If you're that sloppy it's easy to be off hundreds of dollars.

 

Back in the day we used a cigar box for the spending money and mason jars for the savings. And we liked it. :wavey:

 

Back in the day we were so poor we didn't have a pot to.... well..... ummmm.... use. Didn't have the window to throw it out either.

I usually balance my checkbook online. I do not like the register and never have, even before the Internet I keep a daily watch on my account.

 

I round up all purchases to the next dollar. If I spend 11.26, then I write in 12.00 - the bank balance is always higher than what my check register says.

 

Do you set your bedside clock ahead 5 minutes so you're never late for work, as well?

I am currently paying for everything in cash or loading it onto a prepaid debit card, so no need to do that here.

 

I've always been pretty good with money and si from an early age I've got into the habbit of once a week going through the list of transactions and checking off what activities are on the bank statements.

Online banking for me as made money management a lot simpler, and I think more people should take advantage of the services that are offered these days.

 

Go transfer a car at the county clerk and they charge a flat fee if you use a card.

Sending in taxes to various government entities... they like checks to be included with the paperwork.

Lots of large business transactions charge you 3% more if you use any type of card.

Lots of mom and pop restaurants are cash or check only.

If you do pay cash, the way you get that out of the bank is basically to write a check to yourself.


Checks haven't exactly gone the way of the dodo bird.
