I have addressed the 7 deadly sins in a poll form. I have very little response on the poll, and no comments. For those of you who wanted a poll on gluttony, that poll is your chance to respond to that sin, and 6 others.

I think Baptists are all in favor of gluttony. Any non-sexual sin is fine by them.

This would be a really good topic for discussion...maybe I will bring it up the next time me and some area Pastors have our get together at the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet at KFC.

Sin is sin. It's all wrong. Yes, God's people believe gluttony is a sin, BUT for some reason they only point fingers at fat people for being gluttons. Gluttony is an excess of ANYTHING, not just food.

Like gluttons for punishment? :) Sorry, couldn't resist that one.
Actually, yeah. There are some who seem to RELISH (no pun intended) whining to anyone and everyone with a "woe is me" complex. You know the kind, no matter what is wrong with you, they've experienced worse, they've had it harder, they've suffered more. . .I call those gluttons for attention. They feed off the sympathy and goodwill of others. The minute you stop listening, stop giving hand outs, stop feeding the behavior, they move on to someone else to tell their sob story to.

Going to Godfather's Pizza buffet or Golden Corral is now somehow "gluttony"? An overweight person is automatically classified as a glutton? What warped world do you all live in??

Now I'm a glutton for punishment, a glutton for work, and as Admin here a glutton for abuse. But I eat until I am full and walk (or waddle) away. :saint:

Gluttony is an INTERNAL sin of the heart. It is rooted in lack of faith in the provision of God so you eat everything in sight.

BTW, the Greek word is "Fag" - can't make that up!!

Like Alton Brown, I just call it "GOOD EATS"

And besides, it is quite scriptural. After all, it was Paul himself who approved when he wrote to the church members at Corinth "I buffet my body..."

I know you want to twist it into something it is not but I will go ahead and say there was no insult given.

What else can "stupid" mean? I'm really not one to twist things. You're either calling me or something I said "stupid," which seems insulting. I also fail to see how it is beneficial for discussion.

It has always been an opinion of mind that the scriptures speak of moderation and self control. That for instance there is nothing wrong with enjoying a good meal in moderation. Romans had vomitoriums where they ate until they vomited. I guess they had a real problem with acid reflux. I don't think there is a problem with feeling full. I also believe in our puritanical view of work; we in this country over emphasise work and center our lives around it. We never look down on a person who works too much. However, I think this is just as distructive as the vomitoriums. I think Fasting and making our bodies submit to our minds and will have a place in christianity as well. Sexual temptations are offset by our discipline. So again I think its about moderation in life and most things.

There is no doubt what you said was idiotic. And it is an expression that what you said was not beneficial for the discussion nor true.

My question is when I consider that we are to have all of Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, and not just a moderate amount, would your answer be the same if you were standing next to a starving person?

I'm not sure what you are getting at. I believe as far as satiating our bodies we should do so in moderation. I also believe in subjecting our bodies to our will and be disciplined and then submitting our will to christ and thus our bodies will follow. As for being moderate with our faith and filled with God. I don't believe I suggested such a practice. I think we should be extravegant with God as our lives are centered around him.

As far as a starving person. I've actually been around a few. I don't know if you have but I have. You can feed them but you can't let them over do it because it can be very harmful. They need to gradually increase food intake amounts. And observe them for symptoms of Hypophosphatemia but in any case I would of course give them food. Just not a dangerous amount.
