Baptist vs Brethren

    Are the Brethren's Doctrine the same as Baptist with just different church government ?
    (Example those associated with Grace College & Seminary in Winona Indiana.)

    The Brethern's doctrine could fit within the Baptist distinctive but their doctrine is defined by additional core tenets.

    Anabaptistic theology includes things like separation and community in a sense baptist theology does not. Generally they hold a non-Reformed view of the Atonement. Their doctrine also seperates how they interact in terms of politics.

    There are several Brethren groups that trace their origins from German Anabaptists in the 18th century. The Brethren who operate Grace College are among the more conservative groups and, apart from differences in their observance of the ordinances, hold fairly commonplace evangelical views, including soteriology that is more Reformed than Anabaptist. They are, IMO, probably the least Anabaptist of the Anabaptist successors.

    There are other Brethren groups that maintain more Anabaptist beliefs, such as pacifism and Anabaptist soteriology. The largest group in the U.S., the Church of the Brethren, has an "associated relationship" with the American Baptists Churches, USA.

    What type of separation do the Brethren/Anabaptist practice? Separation of church and state or separation from the world or both?

    As a Baptist I support both. I do my best to practice separation from the world. Separation of church and state, I have no control over.

    I do not know how closely they hold to the theology (we had a Baptist in TX baptize an infant so lines blur).

    But by separation Anabaptists believe it is sinful to hold political office, serve in the military (also a part of non-violence).

    I appreciate their traditional theology but in answer to a puffed up Penal Substitution Theory some (Mennonite) theology seek to remove wrath and violence from the Atonement all together.

    We have several kinds of Brethren, which have no historical connections to the others. Unity of the Brethren traces their roots to Petr Chelčický and Jan Hus in Bohemia/Czechoslovakia in the 1400s. Grace Brethren trace back to Germany in the 1700s. The multiplicity of fellowships with "Brethren" in them keeps me confused about Brethren most of the time.
    What kind of Baptist was this?

    Definitely not much, I agree. I had heard about a case in Ohio several years back, but missed this one in Texas. I'd be glad to get the information.

    I probably confused the issue talking about my own confusion figuring out the Brethren. The ones in the OP are the Grace Brethren and their school in Winona Lake, Indiana. I think this is one of their sites:

    The Grace Brethren of the OP are the modern but not modernist wing of the German Baptist Brethren (Dunkers).

    They were among the "Progressives" (regarding dress, Sunday Schools, etc) in the three-way split of their Brethren group in the 1880s, and were the evangelical/Fundamentalists of the Progressive Brethren split between the Ashland and Grace(Winona Lake) camps in the 1930s.

    For the Grace group's embrace of eternal security, they were inaccurately labeled as "Calvinists" by the Ashland group:

    "In 1939 the 'Progressive' Brethren Church experienced...[a] schism, with those seeking an open position to the issue of eternal security maintaining the name Brethren Church with headquarters in Ashland, Ohio, and those seeking a firm affirmation of eternal security becoming the National Fellowship of Brethren Churches, since renamed Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches (FGBC), commonly called the Grace Brethren Church, headquartered in Winona Lake, Indiana."

    I see the Grace Brethren recently changed their name to "Charis Fellowship", may account for the difficulty in finding info on them.

    Here is their statement of faith:

    Charis Fellowship | Planting Churches - Training Leaders - Doing Good

    Their distinctive baptism and love feast beliefs described previously are found in Article 9
