Today's Christian Mars Hill
Since our Web page is listed with the Fundamentalist Top 500, I have often noticed that consistently the top two sites are the Fighting Fundamentalists and the Baptist Board.com. I decided to take a journey to these web sites thinking that these ought to be my kind of people. Boy, was I mistaken.
The proper name for the first one should be "Former Fundamentalists Fighting Fundamentalists." I found most of the large fundamental schools listed, and some that are questionable. Each had one thing in common. They each have former students who either couldn't cut it and are lashing out now, or former followers who became disillusioned because they were shocked that leaders are not perfect in every way. Evidently, they feel they are finding some kind of healing in being able to vent their anger on an international forum.

I am surprised that these people still read the Psalms (after all, David sinned). How can they read First and Second Peter, since Peter not only denied the Lord, but dishonored the Gentile believers when the Judaizers came to see him? Whatever traumatic experience these sad people had, they have never gotten over it, and will not be satisfied until the schools close, their leaders die, and everybody else agrees with their assessment of how miserable fundamentalism makes everyone. The Fighting Fundamentalists is one sad Mars Hill to go to.

When I travelled to the Baptist Board.com I had higher hopes for something edifying. Instead, its pages are filled with 5 point Calvinism, KJV mocking, Post-Tribulational, anti-local church, anti-Biblical standards, anti-soul winning writers. When I saw that some of these people have submitted thousands of posts to this bulletin board, I wondered if they ever leave the house, and have a life. It was interesting also as to how many of these theologians were women and pastor want-a-be's.

After my journey to these Internet Mars Hills, I began to understand how Paul must have felt as he saw all the pagan deities. However, I believe my trip was worse, because most of these people were Baptists (or claim to be) and should know better. I am reminded that Paul left Mars Hill and went to the wicked city of Corinth where he could start a LOCAL church. I decided to leave my Mars Hill and go soul winning.

RE: Dr. Mike Allison’s article entitled “Today’s Christian Mars Hill” on the web February 3, 2003

Dear Sir –

I am writing to you today to clear up some preconceived conceptions that Dr. Allison must have had when approaching our site, the Baptist Board. It should be known that our site has over 5000 registered members. Despite the operating costs of such a large web community, registration and participation remain free of charge to the membership. I am not writing to you to contradict or deny Dr. Allison’s claims, but rather to put into perspective his harsh critique of a site that means so much to so many.

The Baptist Board was established as a sounding board for the Baptist community at large. There is no affiliation with any denominational sect. We have representatives of the SBC, ABC, IFB, Primitives, Progressives, conservatives, liberals, and moderates alike. The founding vision of the board was to allow a meeting place where all of these members of the Body of Christ could meet and discuss or debate their differences. As time progressed, other denominations were allowed onto the site and they have a designated area in which they can post. The debates there from very skilled Baptist apologists equip believers in the “real world” with skills for witnessing to nonscriptural faiths.

Yes, we have 5 point Calvinists on our site. We also have Arminians, but I suspect that if we were to to take a poll most of the membership would not label themselves in either category. We are just children of God and followers of Christ. The debate over Calvinistic theology rages on and on but for every view posted, an opposition follows.

We have KJV advocates and KJV opponents, but I suspect that if a poll was taken, most of our membership just want to hear and know the Will of God according to the Scriptures. The KJV debate rages on but for every opposing view, a counter follows.

There are indeed those who believe in post-millennialism. We also have pre millennialist and amillennialist. I could go on in the same manner on each of Dr. Allison’s points but I think the reader will get the idea. Our site was not founded on the idea that God made believers with a cookie cutter. Every one of God’s children is unique with their own set of ideas and beliefs. Some may run counter to Dr. Allison’s ideas, but this does not negate the fact that they exist within the Christian community. We are all just trying to discover, explore and implement God’s Will for our lives.

Many of our contributors are women as Dr. Allison noted. Perhaps Dr. Allison has forgotten that it was Ziporah who saved the life of Moses, or that Christ rebuked Martha for trying to stop Mary’s contribution to His ministry. Maybe Dr. Allison does not believe Paul in Galatians 3:26-29 when he tells us that we are all one in Christ. I would hope that Dr. Allison remembers also that we are all theologians and witnesses for Christ. In 1Peter 2 we are told that we are a priesthood of ALL believers. In Acts 17 we are told that to examine the Scriptures to test for truth is a noble endeavor. These principles have lead the Baptist Board through more than 8 million page views from more than 80 countries over the past three years and Lord willing, they will lead us through another 8 million.

I am one of those posters with “thousands of posts” and yes, I have a life: a life with which I strive to be the best servant of God that I can possibly be and the Baptist Board is one of the mediums through which I do this.

The main problem I have with Dr. Allison’s review is that when Paul went to Mars Hill, he preached, he debated, he even won a few converts. He didn’t just leave without saying a word and start telling the LOCAL church of Corinth how hopeless those pagan Athenians were.

I'm sorry he had such a bad experience here but it would have been nice if he could have given a couple of examples.

Calvinists? Sure, but it's a non-essential, so why shouldn't Calvinists have the liberty to come to that conclusion?

KJV mocking? Not at all. It's true that we mock the legalistic "KJVO" and what amounts to the worship of the KJV, but I've never seen the KJV mocked.

Post trib? Yes, but same as with Calvinists, it's a non-essential so why make that big a deal over it?

Anti local church? No, I've never seen that here. Actually, everything I've seen shows just the opposite.

Anti Biblical standards? No. I've never seen that here and the vast majority of the people I've run into here are very aware of what the Bible says.

Anti soul winning? No. Shoot, we even have a whole forum devoted to evangelism.

It's easy to post four or five times in about five minutes.

It has been my experience with many hardline Fundys that debate is not encouraged and this seems to be the primary reason for attack on this board. Wouldn't this be a boring place if we all agreed? I agree with Mike on the Women issue How dare them Women discuss theology seems to be the attitude.

Well spoken and superb address point by point. Perhaps it would behoove the good Dr. Mike Allison, to return and lead us on the "righteous path". Of course he might eventually slide into one of those thousand posts club and discover that he needs to get a "real" life..

As for me it is such a pleasure to discuss and dialogue with my Brothers AND Sisters in Christ, and as with Apollos, who learned the way of God more perfectly from Aquilla AND Priscilla, I learn so much from each of you.

However let it me known that I only spend about 2 hours cumulative on the board a day. And that is so great! It allows me 22 hours in bed eating chocolates and reading romance novels!

I did too, and I wasn't disappointed. We all sift the wheat from the chaff (me, I'm a chaff spreader), but my experience has been enlightening if sometimes frustrating. Kind of like life.

Thanks to the Baptist Board for such a forum.
