This year on our Ukraine Mission Trip, we took a detour at the end and went down to Auschwitz, in southern Poland. We were only able to spend a short time there.

Having seen the Holocaust Museum in DC, and watched / am watching Schindler's list again, I cannot explain the overwhelming atrocity of this place. To even half imagine what the Jews / Gypsies and others experienced through this place wears me out.

    Have you ever been there?

Saggy, I am sure that would be an experience of a lifetime. Having said this, I am not sure I want to go there. I think the emotional upheaval would be more than I want to bear.

During the war, my wife's family changed their last name from Neumann to Newman, just in case the Germans made it to England. As you might appreciate Neumann is the Jewish name..wife's great-grandfather was a Jew.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Never been there. Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the most famous of the holocaust museums (naturally) tells a story of Auschwitz. Very moving.

Don't envy anyone going there. I'm sure it was unbelievably moving.

When we first walked into the place, after having been moved by the holocaust museum in DC, especially the children's museum, which does well to show the upheaval in the livesof the Jews yet --how do you explain that to a child--let alone an adult...The DC museum I spent 4 hours in and still within myself did not /was not ready to make closure on it--So here a few years later, going to Auschwitz, when I first walked onto the site, I entered with a tad bit of cockiness...but as we saw the piles of glasses, the piles of hair, the piles of cyclone I buckets, the piles of shoes, the piles of luggage with names written on them--human beings--I ONLY BEGAN TO SEE THE INJUSTICE OF IT ALL. Children's clothes. Children's shoes. Prayer shawls. Then we walked down to --block ten was it? Block 9 had its windows boarded up on the ten side so they couldn't see what was happening. If you went into block ten, you never came out. Scratches on the wall in the basement showed where many died a slow death.

    Deep sigh.

Then there was the place where they poured the cyclone stuff. Then, burned the bodies.

    And I wonder why?

I have not been to Aushwitz, although I would like to go there as well Yad Vashem.
I have been to the DC Musuem, and moved by the sculpture done in Ivory? Marble? that depicted the "death line".
Since watching "Schindlers List" after it first came out I have collected many books and movies on the subject of the Holocaust.
The main ones that stand out in my mind are "The Devil's Arithmatic" and "Life Is Beautiful".

    Dear SW:

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have been. I was there for several days back in 1995 for the 50th anniversary year of its release. I was there is a mixed group (FASCINATING) of people. Part of what is so amazing with the place is the energy of it. I do not want to get into specifics of what was there, but you all can imagine. In the section that was the museum, the ah, remnants rooms, it was like a HEAVINESS pressing down on me just to be in the same room.

    God bless!

We watched 'The Pianist' the other night and I was overcome by the horror. I highly recommend the movie but it's not for our friends who get depressed easily.

I went with a group to Israel several years ago. One of the places we went was the holocaust museum. Hearing the tour guide talk about the museum and what we could expect to see, I was pretty upset before we even got there, so I went to the coffee/gift shop while the others went through the museum. I just didn't want to see it.

That may sound weird because it IS historical, but somehow on that trip it was nothing I wanted to experience.

HEAVINESS is definitely a good desription that I had of how I felt---it weighed heavy to see some of the things there.

No, nor do I want to. I am however studying about the holocaust at the moment. I think if I actually physically saw the place it would do irreperable damage to my state of mind. I know my limits. I empathise a little too much.
