These knowledgeable and good men were Anglicans. We have preserved the Anglican Theology of that time in several documents. These include these beliefs:

    1) The Apocryphal OT as the Macabees and Bel and the Dragon should be read, just as Jerome said, for example and instruction (not to establish a doctrine)ART VI, 39 Articles.

OK, fess up. Who has read these?

    2) The 4th c Nicene Creed must be believed. Art VIII.

HMMM...who here has even read that? Let's see a show of hands :D

3)The Son is begotten from everlasting of the Father, Art II

    4) God predestines some to eternal life and this is not based on foreseen faith. The number of the predestined cannot be changed. Lambeth Articles, 1-3; Art xvii of 39 Arts.

    5) The Greek should be referenced as authority. This is exemplified in Art IX.

    6) Baptizing may be done by sprinkling.Anglican Catechism of 1549, Edition of 1604.

    7) Babies should be baptised. (Ibid)

    8) Baptism is the instrument by which God engrafts one into the Church. ArtXXVII, 39 Arts

    9) People are to be publicly rebuked for breaking church traditions. Art XXXVI

    10) After His death Christ went to Hell. ArtIII.

The Church of England's BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER (1559) stated: "It is certain by God's Word that children being baptized have all things necessary for their salvation, and be undoubtedly saved"
    (p. 283).

The 1559 Act of Uniformity stated that "the Book of Common Prayer was to be used by all clergy on pain of prosecution."

The Church of England canons of 1604 approved by King James demanded that every benefice-holder subscribe to a statement that the Book of Common Prayer and the Thirty-nine Articles were entirely agreeable to the word of God.

Hence the Anglican Version (AV) was rejected by the bible-believers of that era. The Pilgrims and other non-conformists and dissenters opted for other versions.

It is good to remind Baptists of the history of the English translation by the Anglicans. Modern English translators and policies are held up to scrutiny and the same opportunity should be afforded to those centuries past.

Caveat - be careful. This is dealing with the THEOLOGICAL BELIEFS of the AV translators and Anglican Church, NOT a KJVonly type issue down on the versions forum.
