My son is going into seventh grade and is homeschooled. I want to officially add in current events to our schooling but find our local liberal paper to not be a great resource for news. What would you recommend as a good news source in print that we could get for him? I guess a website could work as well so any good sites there would help. Thanks!

Actually that could be part of the classs - look for bias in the newspaper - liberal or conservtive
I agree with Salty. Let him read both conservative and liberal newspapers. A 7th grader is old enough to start reading and thinking for themselves. Sure you can give guidance and a parent should. But if you try to brainwash a bright 7th grader you may well do exactly what you are trying to avoid, drive him/her into the other camp.
Try online reading newspapers such as:
Washington Times --- conservative
Washington Post --- liberal
Online magazines:
National Review Online --- Conservative
The Nation --- Liberal
On foreign affairs have him read
Foreign Affairs --- these are in depth articles on this important topic.
The National Geographic magazine has very interesting information online.
A sight your son might find helpful is Professor Walter Russell Mead's. He has often stated his concern about the state of journalism today, on what is reported, and what isn't. For his students he created a blog where he pulls articles from the different papers, & often will provide additional insight. Additionally the Professor writes about different places he visits and the people he meets.

Print: The Washington Post. I do find it to be about as balanced as one can expect.
Online: Reuters.com
When online, one of the best things to do is go to another country's edition, preferably from Australia and the like. I've found that by using the .au version of google ( http://www.google.com.au/ ) when looking up news, I can get tons more information that, whether by chance or suppression, isn't available to the same degree in news we get in the United States.

I agree, but many here will not. Also the Christian Science Monitor, which is no longer available in print, is available online and is balanced.

I agree. Also the son should read BBC news just to get a European outlook.
It is interesting how much people in other countries know about the US and sad ... indeed tragic ... how little most in the US know about them.

If you want him to be informed forget the "corporate" news sites the others here have suggested look for alternative news sites and blogs. After you find some suitable to your needs compare them to the "corporate" sites.

These are just a few. I think you'll find more truthful and accurate information in just one of these alternatives than all the "corporatized" sites put together. The mainstream corporate media is there to suppress vital information not publish it. But if you prefer he stay as uninformed as possible by all means stick with the sites everyone else is suggesting. :smilewinkgrin:

Ann, I would go with both the Wall Street Journal and your local paper. Also, this would let him see the differences - not only in the viewpoint but also the levels of writing.
I like what Cal Thomas says about different views - he reads two things every day - The NY Times and the Bible - because he wants to see what each side says. :laugh:
