Exegesis should be done before any system of theology is applied to the text.
Our presuppositions (what we bring to the text) can become a filter that limits what the text is really saying.
We often try to make our system (such as premillennialism) fit the biblical text rather than having the text fit our system.

But here is a suggestion along the lines of what I think you are looking for.

by Roy B. Zuck (Victor Press, 1991).

I'd say the works of Iranaeus and Papias from the church fathers series would be good.


A few years more recent, "Biblical Hermeneutics" by Henry Virkler is very good as well.
