I wouldn't see a 6 year old having much problems with a NKJV. Of course there is always the Bible in Basic english and the Good News Bible that are really easy to read.

Just don't get them started on the NIV :D

The NIV would probably be the best. The NKJV still retains to many difficult sentence structures, IMO, to make it good reading.

King James all the way! As long as it has enough pictures of Jesus blessing infants and carrying fuzzy white lambs, it's a children's Bible.

I have a seven year old and a five year old. I bought a King James Bible for my seven year old.
She reads it almost every day before the bus comes, to my five year old and me.
I think you should get the same bible you read for your child.

I think the question should be which Bible do you
believe will best benefit the child. Since the child
will be reading and memorizing this Bible, which
one is best understood, will benefit for life over
all others, and is the one your chosen religious
circles uses. This is the Bible that you should
    choose.

I was raised on KJV, although it is not my choice
now. While many pasages had to be explained
to me, and my parents and church did not fully
understand it eiither, I did learn to understand
it as well and as easily as they. Sometimes, the
archaic words were tongue twisters, but it is
certainly memorizable for a child, if it is your
    choice.

All five of our children have always had a KJV. It is what we use (my husband and I) and it is what our church uses. Therefore, there won't be any confusion for them, but I also personally think that it is quite understandable for them. We haven't run across any problems thus far.

Read to your Kids ,they will like it more.
Spend time teaching what they are reading about.

    Don't preach LIVE IT.

i have to agree that the NIV's the toughest of those listed. there's a study that shows that it's harder (at least in the Psalms) than the Good News n its successor, the Contemporary English Version:

i'd recommend the CEV, GNB, n Version for the Deaf.

I learned from the 1769 KJV revision. It actually helped me learn English. I did NOT understand the "sayest" v "saith" et al. I was asea over "lascivious" and hadn't a clue about the hundreds of totally archaic words that, yes, were GONE from the language even when I was a kid!

My children learn the KJV for the sake of memorization and continuity. They, too, later confided on how YES, they could "pronouce" the words, but NO, they didn't really understand what they read.

At age 12 we shifted to a modern version for general reading. The Bible came alive. When I had to stop preaching and take minutes simply explaining what an English word meant, they would come home all aglow and show me in the NIV, NASB, NKJV how the word was already explained and modernized and that if I had used that version, I could have spent more time PREACHING and less time being an English teacher.

I simply share what happened with my kids. BTW, they all use the KJV as adults but teach kids from versions that already translated into modern English.

This is simply my personal experience. I do not intend to impose my experience on you or anyone else's experience or theology.

I grew up exclusively on the KJV from my very early childhood, and it worked just fine to carry around to church on Sunday as I lived out my external form of godliness.

When I was saved much later in life, I became interested in knowing what God actually had to say. Reliable translations in 20th century English helped me understand God's Word and grow in Him. I wonder if a child who really wants to know God might be benefited in the same way.
