I would love to devote a year to studying the Bible without anyones notes or commentaries. I'd have several versions and concordances and lexicon.

Seriously now, I am curious whether in your church, or denomination, or religion, you are encouraged to actually read and study the Bible on your own.
And, if you are, do you?
Or do you prefer to read or learn what other people say or write ABOUT the Bible?

You pose these questions as opposing while in fact one cannot study the Bible without listening to other Chriatians and to learn from them.
I do not the 'principle', 'the Bible and the bible only' because it is never that, but always, the Bible and I only.

I do mean the Old original one.
Helen said:My point was not about Bible only, but about Bible period. From what I have seen here on BB and in the churches where we have spoken, very, very few Christians actually have read the Bible or know it at all. Finding out what other people have thought can be very helpful, but there is nothing which can replace knowing the original document itself!
Not knowing Bible is like building your life without a plumb line. You have nothing but other people's ideas about right and wrong to measure what you are doing and thinking by. God gave us His Word for a reason, and that reason was not to be a dust collector.
