The King James Bible. Because I believe God preserved His word for us today in a perfect, one book Bible.

In descending order- KJV, NKJV, NASB

KJV- familiarity, accuracy, proven, representative of MT/BT text family, basis of many good commentaries and works

NKJV- strong representative of MT/BT in more modern language, more easily understood by unchurched people and first generation Christians

NASB- literal, accurate, modern language, testimony of translators

 

The NASB because of its literality and accuracy, as well as its use of better "ingredients" than the translations that are obtained by mix-matching between four or five different Textus Receptus.
The NASB moves away from the poetic form to most closely say what was originally said. There is a word by word translation, rather than phrase by phrase.
The NIV is also a good version for more modern day language.
I use both during personal Bible study for the reasons stated above.

The original Greek and Hebrew as preserved in the MT and BT . Because I believe God preserved His word for us today in a perfect, one book Bible.

Of course, I don't understand Greek and Hebrew, so I use the NKJV, ASV, and NIV as translational references.

KJV... Why would I need another one... If I have trouble with Greek or Hebrew I use a Strongs' Concordance!

I also use the REB,TEV, NJB, and others.

I generally prefer "literal" translations
and translations in the Tyndale/KJV tradition.
So for reading out loud in worship there is
nothing like the ESV, RSV, KJV, and NKJV.

My Bible of preference is the Ben Chayim/Bomberg Masoretic text of 1524-25 as for the OT and Scrivener's 1894 TR edition as for the NT. Both these are published in one and the same volume by the TBS under the name "The Holy Bible in the Original Languages". Yet, due to insufficient skills in the original tongues as for now I resort to a handful formal equivalency versions and interlinears when need be, most often English ones. As to plain versions I most often use the KJV, LITV, YLT. I also use a few formal equivalent versions not based on the aforementioned traditional texts, such as NASB, Darby, ALT, Wuest's Expanded, the last perhaps not to be called a FE version. Interlinears I most often use are Ricker Berry's and Green's, and the NKJV Interlinear.

English Standard Version (ESV). It's based on the best mss, it's quite literal and very readable. It's the overwhelming choice by the who's who of conservatives today.

Next would be NASB. Much more wooden than the ESV but still literal and based on the superior mss.

 

KJV - an accurate translation from the majority text group - excellently readable, extremely beautiful, time-tested - with large amounts of resource materials based on it.

My list is similar to Tom Vols, in that the ESV and the updated NASB are at the top of it. I do believe, however, that the updated NASB sometimes gets a bad rap as being overly wooden or stilted. While that can certainly be said about the original NASB, I do feel that the update did make noticable improvement in those areas.

That said, it is hard to keep the ESV out of the #1 spot.

Although I understand that the NLT is much more of a DE translation than the NKJV and the KJV, I enjoy reading it. For word study I would use the NASB, NKJV, or the KJV along with the NIV.

I would probably include the ESV if I owned one. When the quality improves, I will buy one.
