Bible Translation

Primarily the KJV, and sometimes the NASB for comparison.

 

I tend to use more than one version from time to time.

1) Whatever edition of the KJV for reading, and then

2) NLTse to help me explain some of the passages in #1 (Yeah, I know #1 is the only one that's God-breathed! :smilewinkgrin: )

3) NKJV which is what most of the men who preach at my church's corporate services use ( www.lighthouseministries.org )

4) The NT in 26 Versions because I'm too cheap to buy each of them!

I am still using my 1945 (Cambridge)KJV.

I also use many different versions of scripture, but mostly the original NIV. I also read my Greek NT, but I was never that proficient in Greek so it is a glance in passing on a puzzling text.

My KJV is so marked and noted that maybe I should call it MY Authorized Version.

Wow! That's a well made bible! Maybe I should get one. Except it's doubtful that I'll live another 45 years. :tongue3:

 

The cover is showing signs and a few sections are literally "loose leaf" but still functional.

My secret to longevity is one step at a time, and now, that is about all I can do without falling...:laugh:

I use my KJV for my Bible study along with my NASB and use my NIV at Church where our Pastor uses it to preach out of. I will get an ESV later either from Cambridge or Allan's. I have had my fill with poorly made Bibles and only get top of the line Bibles that will last. :godisgood:

 

I usually use KJV or NKJV. I have used NIV on occasion, but having been brought up on the KJV , I am most comfortable with that version.

I`ve got one in similar condition to that Jim , it`s a favourite of mine.

 

The NIV is not a translation. It is a commentary.

 

And that is an opinion. Not a fact.

 

Well it's certainly a bit "looser" than the NASB, but all translations have interpretation in them. It's the nature of translation from one language to another.

As for me, I regularly use a number of translations / paraphrases in my studies:

King James Version (1769) - Mostly for talking to Mormons
New American Standard - Primarily for serious study in the New Testament
New International Version - Primarily for casual Old Testament reading (the "loose nature of the translation helps with the "loose" Hebrew and Hebrew idioms)
New Revised Standard Version - Primary teaching translation. I'm not married to it, but it offers a readable text in a fresh way to members of our church
The Message - It doesn't pretend to be a literal translation, but it often provides tremendous insight and vivid language to provoke the imagination. A friend of mine who is a gifted Greek scholar (both Classical and Koine) has been very impressed with Eugene Peterson's work in teasing out some of the subleties of the Greek text.

From time to time I will pull out my Hebrew and Greek texts and slog through the original languages to figure out exactly what words are being used and how they relate to each other in the context of the original language. However, I've found that the English translations, with few exceptions, are very good.

 

So I see you haven't read it.Your comment proves you don't know what you're talking about.

 

I still like the NIV commentary along with its translation.

The NIV has been dubbed a "Dynamic Translation" which is legalese type language to describe what is not a word for word translation. Anything other than a word for word translation is a commentary.

 

Try translating German word for word. It won't work, and neither will Greek, in my opinion.

The NIV is a "thought for thought" rendition. Notice I said rendition, which differs a little from a translation.

It's sort of like what ever I think it says, is what I write.

And I do have a copy of the NIV.

So I suppose that you are a firm user of Young's or Rotherham's? Such a strict bar of literalness would disqualify even the NASBU.Please tell us what versions do you think qualify as being "word-for-word" in English.

The NIV is a mediating translation.It's a balance between the literal approach and the more functionally equivalent.The TNIV which updates the NIV leans a little more toward the formal approach -- but still occupies a mediating position.
