Binyamin Netanyahu takes on Russian President over Hamas

Likud chairman Binyamin Netanyahu sent Russian President Vladimir Putin a fiery letter on Friday criticizing his decision to invite Hamas leaders to Moscow.

Netanyahu reminded the Russian leader of his condemnation of Palestinian terror during a meeting Netanyahu held with Putin in Moscow in 2000. He warned him of the ramifications of legitimizing terror by inviting the Hamas leaders.

"Such a move can only provide legitimacy to a terrorist organization that has been defined as such by the entire international community, including the Federal Law of Russia itself," Netanyahu wrote.

"Hamas is not only an organization that has the blood of countless innocent men, women and children on its hands, it also declares openly that its goal is to destroy the state of Israel. The decision to invite the leaders of this murderous organization to Moscow will start a process of legitimizing fundamentalist Islamic terror that plagues the entire world."

The Likud campaign released a statement blaming the invitations of Hamas leaders to Russia and France on Kadima's policies. The Likud said that the international community only began making overtures to Hamas after acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert decided to continue to send tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority.

Israel Criticizes Russia for Inviting Hamas for Visit

JERUSALEM — Israeli officials lashed out Friday at Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he betrayed Israel when he invited Hamas leaders to Moscow and warning of a strain in relations between the countries.

France, meanwhile, expressed support for the Russian move but reiterated that the Palestinian militant group must renounce violence and recognize Israel.

Putin's invitation Thursday to the Islamic militant group Hamas, which won last month's Palestinian elections, represented a break in the European and U.S. position not to deal with the group until it renounces violence and recognizes Israel's right to exist.

Israel has a complex history with Russia, and its earlier incarnation as the Soviet Union. The Soviet empire supported Israel in its early years, but relations deteriorated and eventually collapsed as Israel increasingly allied itself with the United States.

Moscow cut ties with Israel in 1967 in the context of a Mideast war and strongly backed the Arab states. In many of its wars with its Arab neighbors, Israel found itself facing Soviet-trained pilots flying Soviet MiG fighter jets.

Moscow also barred Jews from leaving, jailing many who demanded the right to emigrate to Israel.

Putin's remarks Thursday, for some, brought back memories of the darker days. In a front-page story in Friday's Maariv daily, headlined "The Soviet Union returns," columnist Ben Caspit said Putin broke the worldwide alliance taking shape against Hamas. "Just like the good old days of the Cold War," he said.

I think what Israel did to upset the Russians was to show how inadequate their "Mig" Fighters are when faced with Western aircraft!

Russian elite soldiers have been training terrorist for years. Nothing new.They are for sale to the highest bidder. Now Russia has advisors in the areas of Israel controlled by terrorist in the land give-back deal. Who thought that returning the land was a good idea? Netanyahu walked out. Netanyahu's brother Jonathon died during during the entebbe terrorist seige. He is no stranger to the outcome of such situations.From 1967 to 1972, Benjamin served in an elite commando unit, which engaged in anti-terrorist actions and specialized missions. Netanyahu predicted in the early 90's that terrorism would soon rear its ugly head in the U.S. He knew what he was talking about, didn't he?
