Blessing your meal

Do you say grace before meals?

Why or why not.

Does it sometimes seem to be just out of habit?

How much food does it take to make a meal.
Another wards, if you just make a quick PB & J sandwich, would you say a blessing? How about a ice cream cone, or would it have to be at least a 3 course meal?

This is not a facetious thread, just one to get us thinking.

Usually we do.. we take turns in the family.

If I am in a rush, and grab a quick sandwich, I will say "Thank you God"..

I will thank God for a lot of things, including food. I don't usually close my eyes either.

I usually do too, though sometimes it is more just a habit and then other times, when I take the time to think about it I am truly thankful.

Oddly there are times when I am eating something that is not one of my favorites that I am more thankful.
Because it is then that I am reminded of the blessing it is to have plenty.

No, unless it's for my own sanity, as I can't stand that combination.

This doesn't really apply to me... but for a 3 course meal, how about a 3 course prayer?

I will thank God for a lot of things, including food. I don't usually close my eyes either.

Ooh, eyes open? I'll bet you don't kneel either. Or put your hands together like a child. I'm shocked, I tell you. Shocked!

Is there a difference in "saying" the blessing, "asking" the blessing, "giving" the blessing or simply "having" the blessing? I can understand asking God to bless the food. How do I "give"the blessing?

And where did "saying grace" come from? What does that mean? Oh, I just remembered. It means "saying the blessing."

I prefer "give thanks," with "return thanks" a distant second. With eyes closed, of course, kneeling optional..

I say thanks in the morning for yet another day I can work; thanks on the way to work because I have a job to buy food, clothing, shelter, and reliable transportation; thanks while still in the tree stand for the deer I have shot (or similarly in the boat for the fish or in the field for the dove), etc.

I tend to have brief conversations with the Lord throughout the day, so I don't get too wrapped up about saying something before every meal.

That`s more or less what I do too.

When my children were young, we always said a prayer over our meal, even if we were eating fast food in the car. Our aim was to teach our children to be thankful.

My wife and I still say a prayer over our food at home and in restaurants. We don't when we "grab a burger" at McDonald's and eat it as we ride.

But, you know what? I have to admit it is more habit than substance. I also have to admit that there are times when I say a prayer over our food when we eat out, and my thoughts are not really on thanking God for the food. My thoughts are, "There may be someone here who recognizes me as a pastor, and I wouldn't want them to see me eating without praying first." I know...that is not the wrong motive since I am praying to impress others with my spirituality more than I am sincerely thanking God for my food.

Confession is good for the soul, right??
