There's no such thing as a boring worship service, right?

Not for me. I get excited when people worship and I think "Wow. What a blessing we have"

Only if the word "worship" is being used correctly.

It seems there are a few ways this could go. The two most obvious being that either an individual isn't in the spirit of worship, or the church isn't.

It was said on another thread that sometimes churches need reviving, and I believe that to be true. Sometimes a church can fall into a rut and just do the same old same old, falling out of a meeting for worship and just a meeting for 'doing that stuff we do on Sunday.' If the church isn't gathered, the service can, indeed, be boring.

Yes, there's definitely such thing as a boring worship service. The preacher who talks to slowly, if he were any slower he'd be talking backwards, for example.

Thankfully, most services I've attended make some attempt to keep the attention of the people in the pews.

Well, if entertainment is your only criterion you may as well skip church and see a movie...

I don't think being an interesting speaker has anything to do with entertainment. If a speaker isn't interesting, it's not likely they will be inspiring, and it is very likely that any message will be shrouded by the disinterest of the listeners. No, it's not a preacher's job to entertain the congregation, but I would say that part of being a good preacher is presenting the Word with some flair. Why should the congregants be interested in God's Word if the pastor doesn't seem to be?

I think the attitude one enters with has complete
control of how boring the service will or will not
be. I believe we usually get what we expect.

Regarding boring speakers, I have had a few in
the past--those who do not study the subject
but just get up and say the same things they say
every time they get up there and those you can
absolutely count upon to preach against other
churches. I am So Thankful those days are over!

I have seen a few that were not all inspired or moving along or anything you want to label it...they were boring. But I just found a way to worship without the sermon.

    Whaaaaa.......!??  :(

Find another church, sister. Thats my favorite part of the worship service.

I like what CHarles Hadden Spurgeon said, "If people are falling asleep during the sermon somebody better wake up the preacher"

Good quote! While the worshipper is responsible to pay attention, the pastor is responsible for communicating God's truth. If the pastor is not communicating well, the pastor needs to figure out what he is doing wrong or not doing.

Both the preacher and the listeners share the "burden" in the sermon experience, but the preacher should carry the heavy end. [IMG]

I won't mention names, but I sure I would be totally bored in the churches that a couple of these posters go to.

A true worship service is not boring. A boring service is not worship.

Ok, this is the reason I asked the question:

I heard a preacher say that there is no such thing as a boring worship service even though you might have a boring speaker, etc. He said that worship is strictly between you and God and nothing should be able to interfere with that.

"The service can be boring, but worship never is!"

I don't think the originator of this thread mean worship between God and an individual is boring but Worship services can be boring.

I have been attending a church that has lost over 200 families just for this reason. The music has gone down hill. The preaching is very bad and the speaker who can be dynamic has become boring.
I have watched a very wonderful church being systematically destroyed by a preacher who is really too immature and young to be pastoring this large of a church. The sad thing is the people are just leaving instead of taking a stand against what is happening. The deacon board sits around arguing with each other and none of them wants to do anything but complain.

How about a service where there are "Praise Dancers" (SIC!) [IMG] . What a joke! Praise dancers? That's like McDonald's introducing picture menus for people who don't know how to read! Of course, they don't know how to read, because alot of us are too selfish to take the time to TEACH them how to read. How on earth can you PREACH God's Word through dance? Are there dance moves for every word in the bible? Are there different costumes for different parts of the bible? I'd really like to know, since I can't seem to find ANYWHERE in God's Word where Jesus DANCED His father's Word. I guess I must be STUPID to believe that I DON'T have to be entertained by music and dancers to HEAR the word of God. I guess I must be GUILTY OF LEGALISM since I want to hear God's Word PREACHED/SPOKEN. I must be an apostate because I want a TRUE MAN of God PREACHING God's Holy Word. I guess I must be legalistic if I disapprove of insipid gimmicks to hold on to my attention in church.

This is the TRUTH, people: If you go to church to be entertained, or to have a non-boring sermon, you are going to church for the wrong reasons. If you want an EXCITING, sensical, FEELING riddled service, then, all YOU want is to have your ears tickled! Where does it EVER say in God's Word that a sermon has to be EXCITING?? Where in the Bible does it EVER talk about praise dancers or entertaining the flock? NOWHERE. If you have to be entertained to listen to the Word of God being PREACHED, YOUR SOUL IS DYING!

Church is not for entertainment. It is for the teaching of God's gospel. If you HAVE TO HAVE an "exciting" church service or sermon, any apostate worldly church is for you. If you have to be entertained in order to take God's Word seriously, you are headed for disaster. If you can't handle what I am saying in this post, then neither can you handle what GOD says throughout His Word! I go to church to be taught about the REAL Jesus, not to be coddled by emotionalism and entertainment. If a church service is 'boring', so what? As long as the REAL Gospel is being preached, it is of no difference whether the speaker graduated from ToastMasters or had a GED! God's Message is the important issue, NOT whether we are bored or entertained. Like the poster earlier said, "If you want to be entertained, go to a movie'. He or she is right. Church isn't around for entertaining; it is a place of WORSHIP. To WORSHIP GOD ALONE, and no-one else! If you have to have, or be entertained by ear-splitting "Contemporary" music, praise dancers, a "dynamic" pastor, or ANY OTHER creature comfort, you are a sad, sad excuse for a christian! REAL Christians know the difference between what is of the world and what isn't. For crying out loud, people, use the discernment GOD gave you!! [IMG] Only then will you be able to focus on the magnificent Word of God, and not the pastor preaching it. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I agree. The worship service is not boring. It is the frame of mind of the worshiper.
