Matthew 19:28 (NASB)
And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
First let us consider when this occurs.
After the audience has been "regenerated." And when will that occur? When Jesus has as ascended to God.
Thus the new birth first occurred after Christ died on the cross!
Subsequent to that, those in view, perhaps more than twelve individuals, will judge in some way the twelve tribes of Israel, i.e. all Israel.
Now, lets return to our word "regeneration." The Greek word here is (transliterated) "palingenesia" (G3824) and is a compound word (anew + source, such as birth)
Our word also appears in Titus 3:5 in the phrase, washing of "regeneration" (or washing of spiritual birth anew).
Certainly the idea is being made alive after being dead. Christ physically died on the cross when He commended His Spirit to God. See Matthew 27:50, Mark 15:37, Luke 23:46 and John 19:30. But He arose, and physically walked the earth, eating and speaking with many people. And He had the scars to prove He was not an imposter.
All of us are initially born spiritually dead, separated from God. But when God transfers us into Christ, we undergo the washing of regeneration or spiritual rebirth, and arise a new creation, created for good works. Thus we are "made alive" together or in union with Christ. Ephesians 2:5, Colossians 2:13
