So. Criticizing the president makes you unpatriotic? Funny. I thought they had freedom of speech. Silly me.

BTW, I don't buy Dixie Chicks and find some of their videos objectionable. But not their politics.

Just thought everyone should know, Natalie Maines, the lead singer who made the comments, is not actually a country singer. She was a pop and hard rock singer before being picked up several years ago by the other two members.

The first lead singer was fired, from her own band, because she was "too country." I guess the new fad is to be more rock, right?

If you listen to some of their lyrics, you will realize that, if not all three, at least Natalie is not a very Godly person. One of their songs talks about killing her husband. Another talks about going to heaven on a sin wagon. It's very sad the someone with such views is in a position to influence so many young people.

Personally, I am ashamed that the Dixie Chicks hail from Texas. Could we give them to France? :D

    rsr,

While I disagree with characterizing their position as unpatriotic, the Chicks' freedom of speech doesn't mean that the rest of us lose our right to object to the content of their speech, now does it? I do object to their stating their position (though not their right to do so) while overseas.

I never said anything to the contrary. We are all free to buy what we like and reject what we don't like. I only objected to characterizing them as "unpatriotic" because they disagree with Bush's policies, as I do. I'm no big fan of the Dixie Chicks, so a boycott is no big deal to me.

I, for example, do not like to deal with Wal-Mart, but I don't consider those who do as being "unpatriotic."

Which is interesting since their latest CD is pretty much bluegrass - going back to their roots.

But they're not bluegrass enough for me. [IMG]

Maines should offer an humble apology. As I've stated on another board, when you make comments like that, you intentionally enter the arena of socio-political commentary and are judged by your words. So, with that in mind, she has insulted me and my state, and I will not forget.

I will not in any way give up my Dixie Chicks CD's. I like ther music. I don't see a problem with the manner in which they voiced their opinion. I may not necessarily agree with it, but they were certainly welcome to comment about it.

My goodness, it's getting to the point where if you don't pee red white & blue, someone's gonna label you "unamerican".

No, going overseas and trashing our president during a time of national emergency is unpatriotic.

I can't boycott them because I don't listen to them, anyway.

Um, I don't think anyone said they were being unConstitutional. We are just pointing out that we don't like what they said. And I was just pointing out that they are stupid. :D

I think the majority here already absains from Dixie Chicks music, not because of their politics, but because it is horrible. Not even close to country....or western...or bluegrass. Pretty close to Pop though.

I think I will take this time to exercise my 1st Amendment right. I can not stand the Dixie Chicks or their music. Give them to France.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines was singing a new tune late Friday, this time in the form of an apology to President Bush for saying she was ashamed that he was from Texas.

"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect," Maines said in her latest statement...

Just a little update for everyone. The two major Country music stations in Houston, 92.9-KKBQ and 100.3-KILT, have pulled all Dixie Chicks songs from the air waves. God bless the station managers for their stand against people like this.

I heard this morning that they have apologized, somewhere outside of the US.

I think the first statement showed their true feelings and I also believe they were trying to cause a stir to bring more people to their overseas concerts.

The second statement only came after learning they were being boycotted in the USA and I don't believe it was sincere.

    Shades of 'Hanoi Jane'?

The audacity to express an opinion... on BRITISH soil no less!

What next? Dissent amongst the mainstream press? We have to put a stop to this before it goes too far.

    Down with the infidels!

A similar thing has occurred on TV. The show The West Wing has gotten critical reviews and was getting high ratings. Then the star, Martin Sheen,("I'm not a President, but I play one on TV") began to pontificate on foreign policy and voice his opposition to the Bush Administration. People stopped watching the show, the ratings have dropped, and it is likely to be cancelled next year. Stars have a perfect right to voice their opinion. If I disagree I have a perfect right to stop buying their products/watching their show. Freedom cuts both ways.

Given the fact that many country music fans are flag-waving Americans, The Dixie chick's comments may not be very popular. When the music stopped, she should have shut her mouth!
