Boycotts

Every so often I receive in the mail unsolicited mailings from some "Christian" organization that tell me that it is morally imperative that, as a Christian, I boycott certain corporations because someone in "corporation XYZ" has made it a corporate-wide policy to do something that violates some Bible principle such as promoting gay marriage or abortion.

Now, granted, I am opposed to such things as gay marriage and abortion. However, does that therefore mean that I, as a born-again Christian, must boycott "corporation XYZ"?

Personally I don't see that boycotting "corporation XYZ" will necessarily change anything. Moreover, I'd venture to say that a large percentage of "corporation XYZ's" employees probably don't agree with such so-called "social policies" that come from corporate HQ either, but will still remain as employees because they need the money to survive.

What's your opinion on boycotts?

My own opinion is that boycotts rarely accomplish little more than to cause feelings of self-satisfaction in the participants.

As for others dictating what a Christian is required to boycott, I pay them no mind.

I would suspect that a certain amount of the people running those "Christian" organizations are serving the god of mammon, which would qualify some for the boycotts they are pressing for.

What they said ^

Boycotts are rarely effective and frankly unrealistic with the modern world. If we boycotted everything that somehow supported non-Christian causes, we'd all be Amish.
