André de Soveral, and Ambrósio Francisco Ferro, diocesan priests, and Mateus Moreira, layperson, alongside 27 companions, martyrs, killed in hatred of the faith in Brazil on 16 July 1645 and 3 October 1645

The martyrdom of André, Ambrósio, and their companions took place in the context of anti-Catholic persecution by Dutch Calvinists who had invaded the Rio Grande do Norte region of Brazil in 1630.

The Massacre at Cunhaú occurred on Sunday, July 16, 1645....Dutch soldiers barred the church doors and launched an attack against unresisting civilians.

The Massacre at Uruaçu (Oct. 3, 1645) was led by a convert to Calvinism.

"These are two cases of collective martyrdom occurred in ....the troubled period of Dutch rule in Northeastern Brazil....authorities, influenced by the Calvinist Reformed Christian Church, began...religious persecution of the small Catholic communities....The situation worsened in such a way that it culminated in the holocaust of numerous Christians of these communities"

"Antonio Paraopaba....educated in Holland and later constituted by the Dutch ruler of the Indians of the Rio Grande captaincy, had converted to the Reformed religion and was a fanatical advocate....he was at the head of a squad of more than two hundred....surrounded the defenseless settlers....Then began the terrible carnage....killing, plucking out eyes and tongues, cutting off the shameful parts and [censored]....left their bodies, so much that they did not even have the forms of trunks...split them open and disemboweled them, after cutting off their heads, legs and arms"
