    WASHINGTON -

    "President Bush cast the first veto of his 5 1/2-year presidency Wednesday, saying legislation easing limits on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research "crosses a moral boundary" and is wrong."

    "This bill would support the taking of innocent human life of the hope of finding medical benefits for others," Bush said at a White House event where he was surrounded by 18 families who "adopted" frozen embryos not used by other couples, and then used those leftover embryos to have children."

    He does the right thing, once-in-a-while.

    Good for him.

    Yep, a sad day when this "pro-life" President vetoes a bill that could lead to saving millions of people. This is just a temporary setback, as the will of the people seems to be against Bush on this, and it will evenutally be signed by a future President or a veto overridden at some point. Still, many will die and suffer due to the advances coming too late for them.

    Embryonic Stem cells, to my knowledge, has not cured a single disease. Adult Stem cells, on the other hand, has actually shown some promise. This is not about saving lives. This is about the liberal left promoting and expanding their pro-death, pro-abortion agenda in America. If the liberals really cared about saving lives, they would be pushing and advocating more adult stem cell research. They are not. Bush made the right decision on this one. Good for him.:thumbs: :applause: :thumbsup:

    Adult stem cells do not show the same promise at present, and many on the left have advocated exploring that option as well. This is not about anything but playing to the base for the 2006 election at the cost of advances that can save lives. There is also no Biblical or scientific evidence that a blastocyte is a human being. It could become one, just as a cell from a cheek swab could become one if cloned. A clump of cells do not have rights over a human being.

    It's not important that cloned sheep live short, miserable lives. It's also unimportant that rats treated with embryonic stem-cells develop tetranomas. What's important is that we create life, specifically to destroy it. It's what the abortion crowd wants.

    Isaiah 44:24 & 25

    Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

    That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise men backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;

    Yeah, because we have deceased adults, lets farm unborn babies to get their stem-cells, that we dont even know will cure anything. It is alright to use humans as guinie pigs (sp) but its not ok to use guinie pigs as guinie pigs. Those unborn babies are worthless and their lives are not as important as those who are already walking around.:rolleyes:

    God help us!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Therein lies the issue...these are not "unborn babies", they are masses of undeveloped cells that cannot feel, think, eat, or anything else. Every month women cast off human cells, as do men by the millions. These are not unborn "babies".

    And yes, a blastocyte, zygote or whatever is NOT as important as those people already here "walking around".

    But, what you are advocating is the farming of these embryos for scientific purposes. Clarify something for me, what kind of embryos are they? Are they life? They may not be fully developed human beings, but are they life? If left to the natural process what would happen to them? Finally, there is a huge difference between the "human cells" cast off by human beings naturally and an intentional creating of human life, albeit in the embryonic stage, for experimental purposes.

    Well, are you grateful, MP, that when your mother conceived you, she didn't donate her blastocyte or zygote for stem cell research? :smilewinkgrin:

    I know I'm glad I wasn't cast off as human waste by my mother. I know I'm glad my little zygote turned into a son and my daughter-in-laws two little zygotes turned into my grandbabies. :):flower:

    That is a false statement. The idea that embryonic stem cell research will ever amount to anything is pie-in-the-sky. It is a waste of money.

    I urge anyone who is interested in reading about real cures that are already taking place from adult stem cell and cord blood research to explore www.stemcellresearch.org.

    One of the big problems in the U.S. is that just because people support something they want the government to advocate and subsidize it - such as embryonic stem cell research.

    There is no reason for the federal government to be involved in this moral issue of embyronic stem cell research at all. Anyone who wants to carry on this research can do so with private funds. As I recall, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates have tons of money - more than the federal government does since it is running about a $550 billion yearly deficit. So those in favor of this research should go to them for money and not expect those of us opposed to this research on moral grounds to fund it with our money.

    Plus all we ever hear about is potential - and then only decades away - and it will only remain potential regardless of how much money is thrown at it. But if private individuals and organizations want to waste their money on this foolishness they are free to do so.

    Again, there is actual progress being made in adult stem cell and cord blood research - www.stemcellresearch.org. It is well past the mere potential stage as there are actual benefits being realized.

    Let's not waste taxpayers' money on pie-in-the-sky, morally controversial embryonic stem cell research. If we are going to spend taxpayers' money on research in this area then let's spend it where results are already being realized and are actually benefitting people - on adult stem cell and cord blood research.

    And kudos to President Bush for standing up to this nonsense and vetoing this bill to nowhere. :applause:

    There isn't one scintilla of evidence to support that embryonic stem cells perform any better than any other stem cell. Lots of placenta and umbilical cord out there, folks.

    Actually, these fertilized eggs are not farmed for scientific purpsoses, but for implantation into a woman who has trouble conceiving. These are not "conceived" in the usual way, but in vitro, under glass, artificially. More eggs are harvested and fertilized than would be used the first go round because it is an expensive, grueling process; if the first implantations don't take, the extras can be used. But if the pregnancy is successful, the extras are usually unwanted and destroyed.

    Um, natural process? They are not natural. They spend their "life" multiplying in a petrie dish until they are the size of a period, '.', then they are frozen in a cannister of liquid nitrogen until they deteriorate past utilizing, at which point, they are flushed or incinerated.

    That is not why they are created in the first place, but once they are and are merely going to be disposed of anyway, why not have some good come of it?

    If you consider all these fertilized eggs to be little never-born babies, who will bear them? I haven't heard of any charity groups donating the use of surrogate wombs to bear these thousands of extra embryos. Perhaps you could get a law passed that would require all eggs harvested from a woman to be implanted into her. What do you think should be done?

    In vitro fertilization which results in extra babies that are not implanted should be made illegal.

    Whereas, as Governor of Texas, he oversaw the record pace of executions in that state, even childishly mocking a death row inmate publicly;

    Whereas, he has sent US military personnel to die under false pretenses;

    Whereas, his illegal and unprovoked invasion of the sovereign nation of Iraq, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi people;

    Whereas, he vetoed a bill funding scientific research which could save the lives, and ease the sufferings of hundreds of thousands of victims of such diseases as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers, Parkinson's Disease, spinal cord injuries, and many, many other afflictions of humankind,

    I hereby bestow upon George Walker Bush, the title of "Bush - The Death President"(tm).

    ------

    Seriously, Bush is a hypocrite playing politics with people's lives. If he believed that zygotes are human beings, he would try to outlaw in-vitro fertilization entirely, as well as any privately funded research. This is politics, pure and simple.

    The research and benefits WILL eventually happen. When they do, it is my fervent prayer that Bush, any member of Congress who voted against the bill, or anyone who opposes such research, will be denied the benefits of any treatment resulting from such research. Religious fanatics have always stood in opposition to scientific advancement, but once it is achieved over their objections, they are standing in line to reap the rewards.

    Embryonic stem cell research's potential amounts to as much as the potential I had to be the next Roger Staubach(famous Dallas Cowboys quarterback for those who don't know). Meaning - zero real potential.

    President Bush vetoed this bill to nowhere and he was totally right to do so.

    How much money have donated privately to embryonic stem cell research, MP? Or do you only want to spend other people's money on this nonsense?

    Well, that will put couples in a dilemna - do they implant all of them and hope the mother survives like Nkem Chukwu?
