CAFTA Debate & Vote Tonight

I expect my GOP Congressman to ignore the numerous calls he has recieved from his voters here in Central Florida and join the rest of the Bushbots in passing CAFTA.

I just got off the phone with my Congressmans office, they said that he did vote against NAFTA, but is now leaning to yes on CAFTA, they told me that he met with the President today, and the President has encouraged him to support "fair trade" by supporting CAFTA.

 

Hidden in the 2,400 pages of CAFTA

At 2,400 pages, the Central America Free Trade Agreement isn't really about trade. Frankly, you don't need 2,400 pages to eliminate tariffs and regulations on exports and imports. But, you might need 2,400 pages to smuggle through a new set of transnational corporate rights disguised by complicated legalese. I wonder, how many members of Congress will even bother to read this trade tome before voting?

I recall in 1994 that only one senator, Republican Hank Brown of Colorado, accepted Ralph Nader's challenge to win $10,000 for charity by taking a simple 10-question quiz on the content of the World Trade Organization agreement. After studying the agreement, Brown announced to the press: "I am a Republican, pro-business and a proponent of the free market economy and I am here to speak out against the WTO. For when you read this text – and I invite my colleague senators to do this – you will understand that the WTO is fundamentally undemocratic."

Any member of Congress who thinks CAFTA is merely about free trade should look carefully at its provisions on government contracts and corporate lawsuits, among others.

Rep. Charlie Norwood (R) from Georgia is speaking against CAFTA on CSPAN right now, I wish his fellow members of the GOP would listen to him instead of letting George W. Bush use his strongarm tactics to bribe them into supporting this dangerous piece of legislation.

 

Disappointed in Nelson, not surprised at all by Martinez. I wouldn't cast a vote for Martinez for ANY office. If he ran unopposed, I simply would not vote.

It's laughable to see all those Bushbots on the FreeRepublic(an) Web site talking about CAFTA, they are saying that anyone who votes against it supports Castro, Chavez, etc.

The imbalance of power...Republicans hold the
senate,house,executive, and supreme court.

Tom Delay would have been gone a long time ago
if the house had more independents and democrats
and maverick republicans...but yet he stands there
guaranteeing a victory ..well we know what he did
last time to the point of threats.

It is never good for our Republic when all the
balance is one sided...if just the house was
filled with the peoples politicians instead of
the lobbyists politicians the common man might
have a fighting chance and keep the fox on the
outside of the hen house.

They need to keep a mic and camera on Tom Delay
at all times tonight...I hear they are offering
deals and money through the highway bill.
