CAFTA Reflects Democrats' Shift From Trade Bills

    By Jonathan Weisman
    Washington Post Staff Writer
    Wednesday, July 6, 2005; Page A01

Twelve years ago, amid heated rhetoric over job losses and heavy union pressure, the House passed the North American Free Trade Agreement with 102 Democratic votes. This month, as President Bush pushes the far less economically significant Central American Free Trade Agreement, he will be lucky to get more than 10.

A long, slow erosion of Democratic support for trade legislation in the House is turning into a rout, as Democrats who have never voted against trade deals vow to turn their backs on CAFTA. The sea change -- driven by redistricting, mounting partisanship and real questions about the results of a decade's worth of trade liberalization -- is creating a major headache for Bush and Republican leaders as they scramble to salvage their embattled trade agreement. A trade deal that passed the Senate last Thursday, 54 to 45, with 10 Democratic votes, could very well fail in the House this month.

Don't forget: the GOP controls the House. If DeLay and Hastert are on board with this, then it will pass.

Like I said before, this is undoubtedly part of that "mandate."

All I know is that before NAFTA, the Upstate of South Carolina was the textile capital of the world... Now, all the textile plants around here are either gone, or drastically reducing their workforce...

I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid... CAFTA is just NAFTA's little brother. Let's watch as the remaining textile jobs cross the border!

Did you see this article, Ken?

Yep, it's part of that "mandate."
Of course, since NAFTA was such a stellar success, I am sure that I have no reason to doubt the benefits of CAFTA......

What will happen to you (in terms of your political affiliation) if the GOP passes CAFTA, Ken?

    Hope all is well,

Bush has personally met with the "undecideds" on the GOP side this week to let them know that if they don't support CAFTA, then he will make sure none of their bills will pass in Wasington.

Of course: to usurp a word from the Vice President, they have a "mandate."

First they brought us NAFTA, now they bring us CAFTA, next on their agenda is the FTAA. They are slowly destroying our Constitutional Republic, and they have the support of conservative voters simply because they are also fighting a "war on terror".

"If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy"

Yes, the same great state that I was born in! ;)

I took my wife to visit James Madison's Montpelier one day during our honeymoon. [IMG]

We'll just have to see what 2008 holds in store and what the state of the world is at that time. It's way too soon to know.

In the meantime I will continue to oppose policies that increase the size of our Big Nanny, intrusive, hyper-centralized government.

Looks like CAFTA passed after all. It was indeed part of that "mandate." I know that I am convinced that open trade with the countries of Central America will be a real shot in the arm for our economy.

It makes you wonder what else is in store for America, doesn't it?

    Regards,
    BiR

Hoosier farmers are on board for CAFTA because they will be able to sell a couple of pounds of small potatoes to Central America. I don't think the deal amounts to a hill of beans. I look for CAFTA to pass. Investors Business Daily newspaper is for it, and I imagine that the Wall Street Journal is also.

Like I said before, remember what the average worker makes down in Central America. Exactly what are they going to buy that will be a shot in the arm to our economy?

I told you--a small amount of agricultural commodities, as far as Indiana Republicans are concerned.
