California: Politically Correct Textbooks !

Typical, typical, typical. Mark it down. One day they will have organized book burnings.

 

"Older person" is less 'demeaning' than "senior citizen?"

Just last night I was watching the tapes I made at Mt. Rushmore last summer, and the Crazy Horse monument-- if it's ever finished to look like the model of it-- will itself be at least as big as the all the 4 U.S. presidents.

And where had the word "devil" been used in the textbooks? What are they gonna say? "Tazmanian whatever?"

And people wonder why homeschooling is becoming so popular.

 

When I first read this, I thought it was just another..."California's 9th Circuit court..." thing that is always reversed for a more common sense approach. However, our local news has begun carrying stories about it.

The thing that really gets me, California is the largest buyer of textbooks, so if they want the books changed, the book companies will change them. And they'renot gonna make a normal person copy and a California copy. We're all gonna be seeing the same books in our schools, from Cali to Texas to Georgia to NY.

All of our kids will be using the so-called new and improved book revisions.

Are these the same people who revised the bible to say it instead of he/she?

 

I'm currently reading The Language Police which is about this very subject - various publishers' bias committees and school board policies. Some of it makes sense, but a lot of it is extremely misguided (particularly in the "leaving out history because it might be offensive" vein).

 

I just re-read the article, and it appears to be quite misleading, not to mention biased against California.

The report was filed in Los Angeles, it does not say that the review process is taking place in California, or who is doing the reviewing. Instead, it says that textbook review processes are "taking place in states across the country". It goes on to say that "many textbooks will no longer feature" certain items. But what the article fails to say is not that those phrases are being stricken, only removed is some specific areas where they are not relevant. In other areas, they remain unchanged.

It says the founding fathers will no longer be referred to as "The Framers". Actually, that's not political correctness, that's a matter of correction. The "Framers" are the folks that were involved in the creation of the Constitution. The "Founding Fathers" were those who were involved in the fight for independence. Many reference texts have referred to the Constitution drafters as founding fathers, but Early American historians have over the years drawn a clear distinction between the two.

The article talks about "snowman" and "yacht", but fails to tell us where those words appear in the first place.

The article ends by inferring that California and Texas are the ones making the cnanges. But that ain't so. In reality, textbook printers want the business of the school boards in California and Texas, because those are the biggest markets.

The article closes with a defense from a person from the California Department of Education, but doesn't even say whether or not the Calif D of Ed is involved in the review process.

Is the part where I get to make a crack about the "liberal media"????

 

After reading the article I'm not sure this will amount to much if anything practically speaking.

I get the impression that there is an attitude that if California is involved, it must be bad. And this is just foolishness I'm afraid. The only difference between California and any other state are high population numbers and temperate weather.

Let's wait and see if the sky really is falling before running around like Chicken Little declaring it to be so...shall we?
