California teacher brags about indoctrinating students toward antifa

What, specifically, do you object to in the statements of this teacher?

Let's be clear about antifa - it is a highly diverse set of groups, some of whom are entirely peaceful, others of whom embrace the use of violence.

You wouldn't be trying to gloss over this distinction and seek to paint all of antifa as a sinister force, would you?

In short, what, exactly, does this teacher say that is in any way objectionable?

Since sunlight is the best disinfectant, here is something about Project Veritas, the organization that produced the video:

Project Veritas is an American far-right[36] activist group founded by James O'Keefe in 2010.[40] The group produces deceptively edited videos[24] of its undercover operations,[16] which use secret recordings[17] in an effort to discredit mainstream media organizations and progressive groups.[48][49] Project Veritas also uses entrapment[23] to generate bad publicity for its targets,[2] and has propagated disinformation[14] and conspiracy theories[56] in its videos and operations.

Hmm. Deceptively edited videos.....

Let's say this teacher really is a bad guy -that he advocates violence or something else that is objectionable to reasonable people. So what? Trust me, I could start hundreds of threads about the antics of right-wing crazies - it is truly a "target-rich" environment.

Seriously, though, it is not responsible to advance one's position by pointing out that there are nutcases on the other side - there will always be nutcases on both sides of any issue.

Is this “nutcase” teaching children in a school?

That might be a distinction worth noting.

peace to you

bub you haven’t been on this board long enough to know that about me.
Well "bub", why aren't to able to tell us precisely what this teacher says that is objectionable? Surely you understand that when someone cannot produce evidence to support a claim, this strongly suggests that claim was fabricated out of thin air.

Saw this quote in a restaurant Tues. night, & first thing I thought of was a certain poster who shall remain nameless at this point.

Let’s assume to begin with that I know everything, & that way the discussion will be simpler! Confused

All I an add is - sure does fit perfectly.

I'm speaking as more of a moderate than a true far-right conservative. And I'm a retired teacher with 32 years of experience. So note that.

I find it odd that you don't find anything amiss with this man's statement of "I have 180 days to turn them into revolutionaries." And when asked how, he said, "Scare the @@@@ out of them." What competent teacher on this planet uses threats, insults, and political fearmongering to teach their content?

What kind of teacher training did this man have? Not in my own training in days gone by nor in the training that I give now to new teachers has fear tactics EVER been taught as proper and competent pedagogy. What was his subject matter? Math? Civics? Art?

I find it odd that you also have no problem with his quote to his student who complained of being "uncomfortable" that his purpose of hanging the flag in his classroom was "to make facists uncomfortable and maybe you shouldn't be aligning iwth the values that this is antithetical to."

Perhaps these two statements alone is why his school district is firing him.

scarlett either he didn’t actually watch the video or he supports those statements. Either way it begs the question why does all that need explaining.

lefties are good at asking useless questions and playing ignorant as if everyone should know nothing is going on when we all know there is.

Portland State philosophy prof quits in public letter calling the school a 'Social Justice factory' | Daily Mail Online

This is where we are. Now there is one less reasoning mind to teach. There is only one way to protect children & young adults. Home school/trade school & extreme due diligence in choosing the institution of learning/higher learning. Hillsdale College is one, they take no government money. If there are others parents need to be made aware. I failed. I allowed my child to attend University of Michigan. Almost twenty yrs later all I can say is it sounded ok at the time.

that PSU teacher is spot on, might as well quit than dealing with those people that will never listen to reason or tolerate anyone who happens to disagree with them. These jackboots need to be weeded out of the entire education system, and that "teacher" has been fired, and he deserves it, IMO.

"I have an Antifa flag on my wall and a student complained about that and he said it made him feel uncomfortable," he said. "And I addressed it to everyone because I didn’t know who it was. ‘Well, this is meant to make fascists feel uncomfortable, so if you feel uncomfortable, I don’t really know what to tell you. Maybe you shouldn’t be aligning with the values that [the Antifa flag] is antithetical to.’"

he was probably in that crowd to tried to egg Larry Elders today.

Obviously, there are going to be right-wing nutcases that teach children in school as well.
I’m sure there are teachers who still have American flags in the classroom, love the USA, believe in God, believe children should be taught to read, write and be proficient in math rather than be taught to hate the country, and be little revolutionaries.

peace to you

I understand your point but it is clear that the mere term "revolutionary" is not enough to imply use of violence. For example, Jesus has been rightly characterized as a revolutionary.

And when asked how, he said, "Scare the @@@@ out of them." What competent teacher on this planet uses threats, insults, and political fearmongering to teach their content?
Again, the "Scare the @@@@ out of them" phrase is often a perfectly appropriate phrase to use in casual conversation. As with "revolutionary", the use of this phrase is not particularly strong evidence that this guy is promoting anything inappropriate. My doctor might use this phrase to get me to exercise more - "Andre, my goal is to the scare the @@@@ out of you - you need to exercise more for your health". Is he threatening me or engaging in fearmongering? Of course not.

What is wrong with the notion of opposing fascists?

In short, I think there is nothing in what this guy said in this clip that is particularly damning. Perhaps he really is a bad egg, but I think one cannot fairly reach this conclusion based on what is said in this clip.

In any event, the event thread is based on an anecdote - interesting, but not at all useful in gauging what is really going on in society.

Obviously incorrect.

First, I did watch the video - unlike some here, I carefully check things out before I post.

Second, it obviously does not logically follow that I support this guy just because I make a case that what he said in that clip does not go over the line.

Might be a little bit of a stretch to compare this guy, or antifa, to Jesus, don’t you think?

He’s bragging about doing this to children!

Not a doctor talking to an adult trying to get him to lose weight,

Everything he said was inappropriate. He is a “bad egg”. He deserved to be fired and all like him as well.

That you would defend him is appalling.

peace to you

This is a misleading and unfair characterization of what I said, and I think you know this. What is with this site? The degree of distortion and inappropriate debating behaviour is disturbing - at least in this forum.

I, of course, did not compare this guy to Jesus. I merely stated that Jesus could be characterized as a revolutionary and that, therefore, for someone to say he wanted to turn students into revolutionaries does not necessarily imply that he wants them to become violent.

You have clearly bent what I actually wrote completely out of shape and are cynically, and falsely of course, suggesting that I am equating this guy to Jesus.

Please respect what I actually write. And it is your distortion of what I am saying that is "appalling".
