Cornyn, Steele Call on Reid to Resign as Senate Leader After Obama 'Negro' Comment

I can't stand Senator Ried and would be happy if he would resign along with about 90% or more of the rest of the Senate and House.

However, I think too much is being made of his comments just like many others before him in recent times. What he said is a true and accurate observation. Obama is "light-skinned" and has "no Negro dialect" when compared to many other politicians of his race. It is not racist to make that observation or to state it. It would be similar to saying a person was a "fair-skinned Swede" with a "slight Swedish accent". So what? I do think we've become much too sensitive to the words because of the perceived topic.

On the other hand, this same crew racked Senator Lott over the coals back in 2002 for similar infractions of the new ban on any speech that remotely includes any comments that might be offensive to any group as determined by that group's particular political needs of the moment. The double standard is obvious and the triple standard is even more obvious when compared to comments of some black political leaders. The ban has gone too far!

So, as much as like to be rid of Ried, I don't think this is a justifiable cause because it just further firms up a policy that will trap even the best and most careful of speakers and writers. Instead I'd like to see him run off for his support of so much ridiculous legislation.

I don't think it does the Republicans any long term credit when they demand Sen. Reid's resignation over this. It'll just make their own actions more hypocritical in the future. They should leave it alone and demand the same of themselves.

Of course there is such a thing as a "Negro dialect" - if fact there are regional black dialects - just like there is a Southern or a Yankee dialect or just like there is a German or a Vietnamese accent. This is how shallow our political system is. Both sides demand of each other resignation over some name calling, yet ignore the real reason every one of them should resign. Theft of the American taxpayer daily, bribery, anti-Constitutional legislation constantly (some would call treason), back door deals, using public office for enrichment and power, are all reasons for resignation. The first two to go in the Senate should be Senator Reid and Senator McConnell, with the others to follow.

I am reasonably certain Reid's classification did not imply a world wide dialect for one race of people but rather implied the dialect used among American blacks that is the norm of recent generations and not the exception. We should all be able to remember the "Ebonics" movement among blacks of recent times which attempts to capture and prompt this dialect as the "African American Vernacular English".

Yes, it demonstrates that the underlying motives are to destroy the opposition at any cost even with trivia and even if a double or changing standard is applied. It some times difficult to believe there are any grown responsible men left in Washington.

Again, "Negro", in the way Ried used it, referred to black Americans - not the black race as a whole, and, like it or not, his comment was factual. A man - even a liberal Democratic - should be free to make a comment like that without being labeled a "racist" for it. Lott, by comparison, should never have resigned over what he said. We've gotten far to sensitive in some venues and not nearly careful enough in others.
