Here is an explanation of Calvinism in one word:

    "Prayer"

Looking for thoughts from both C's and non-C's on this notion. Any idea how I could say such a thing?

As viewed though mans eyes.....yes I agree. Prayer.

    From Gods eyes one word.......LOVE

Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us
    Love never fails...
For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.

Notice the love is limited to those He chastens. This means there is a other side to this.

This is the whole point of Malachi 1. Gods people was asking..How do you love us? when did you love us? I can't remember you loving us. Show me where you love us...

    and God said....

The point is to show God loves His people.

    In Christ...James

Honestly, I am not at all sure what you mean, but here is my guess.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

I'd be praying that I wasn't deceiving myself into thinking I was saved.

Yea, and I can hear the prayer.

"Lord please let me be one of the elect".

    Hi JD;
We all need prayer and we all need to pray. When I forget to pray it isn't long before I'm banging my head against the wall.:BangHead:

If I were choosing one word to define Calvinism, it would be "Sovereignty". Either God is sovereign or He is weak and vulnerable. I prefer sovereign!

    Cheers,

Sovereignity is good. Especially if God is Soveriegn and smart enough to create man subject to vanity and given a choice between good and evil. I mean, who else could do that, it would have to be someone who was completely in control of creating man.

    Gen:
25: And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26: And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

He also created this man to have dominion over the beast, fish, fowl, creeping things.

So, you prefer a weak-kneed God who is vulnerable to the whims of humankind. Sorry, not my idea of God.

    Cheers,

Sorry you would describe a God, who was able to create a much more complex man, one that could choose whom he would serve, than the one, who has to wait to see if he is one of the chosen or not. I mean if you are one of the few that is chosen, you can rejoice, but woe unto them that are not chosen, they don't have a chance with your God.

Amen. Not mine either. So many see God as this old grandfather figure sitting up in the clouds wringing His hands at the condition of man and the world in general. I believe that if we keep ourselves and God in proper perspective, we have no problem being afflicted by this "weak-kneed God."

    Calvanism in one word: scriptural.

    In Christ,
    Jason

Not week-kneed or vulnerable but "Merciful" and loving. Now that is my kind of God. What you call weak-kneed and vulnerable is "Mercy".

Wonder why they rejoice in Heaven over one sinner that repenteth, if they already know that he is one of them? Strange!!!

Calvinism in one word? Irrelevant. Or perhaps unimportant. The gospel is important. Calvinism simply diverts attention and confuses would be believers.

You couldn't be more wrong S&N . Calvinism -- irrelevant ? Hardly . It is the Gospel as C.H. Spurgeon and others have said all along . ( Well , Piper has said God is the Gospel and I can't really argue with that . ) Far from being a diversion , it gives biblical direction to believers . There is internal cohesion to its parts . And , may I say , there is a witness to the Spirit that it is true .

    "Hopeless"

Should be obvious how I could say such a thing.

C'mon, J.D., we're waiting for an explanation here.

Here's what I think. The Calvinist is the only one who can have any assurance that his prayers avail anything. I can't understand why non-Calvinists pray at all.

Spurgeon said it was prayer. Why do you think I agreed with it? :)
