This list proves nothing about Calvinism. It's not the adherants of a belief that make the belief true. Let me get that out of the way before anything else. This is ONLY a list. Why am I posting it? Because many free-willers, anti-Calvinists, Arminians, or whatever they prefer to be called think their beliefs are somehow the orthodox Christian position. They are wrong. Here's proof:

    Poets and
    hymn writers

    John Milton
    "Paradise Lost" and "Paradise Restored"
    (1608-1674)

William Cowper "There is a Fountain"
    (1731-1800)

    John Newton "Amazing Grace"
    (1722-1807)

    Augustus Toplady
    "Rock of Ages"
    (1740-1778)

    Philip Doddridge
    "O Happy Day"
    (1702-1751)

    Horatious Bonar (1808-1889)

    Isaac Watts
    (1674-1748)

    Reformers

    Martin Luther
    (1483-1546)

    John Calvin
    (1509-1564)

    John Knox
    (1505-1572)

John Wycliffe "the father of the Reformation"
    (1320-1384)

    Jerome Zanchius
    (1516-1590)

    Theodore Beza (1519-1605)

    John Bradford (1510-1555)

    Thomas Cranmer
    (1489-1556)

    William Tyndale (1492-1536)

    Ulrich Zwingli

    Hugh Latimer
    (1485-1555)

    Nicholas Ridley (1500-1555)

    Martin Bucer (1491-1551)

    Martyrs

(Augustus Toplady once challenged the Arminians of his time to produce evidence that an Arminian had ever gone to death in martyrdom. But Calvinists and martyrs are synonymous in terms. The Waldenses, for instance, our Baptist progenitors, are well known for their Calvinistic faith and numerous martyrdoms. The Puritans were also Calvinists.)

    John Huss
    burned to death
    (1369-1415)

    Jerome of Prague
    also burned
    (1360-1416)

    William Sautre
    John Claydon
    Thomas Bilvey
    William Tyndale
    James Bainham
    John Lambert
    Robert Barnes
    (burned as well)

John Foxe didn't die a martyrs death, but he was a martyr historian who happened to be a Calvinist.
    (1517-1587)

    Revivalists

(Spurgeon said he had never heard of a revival apart from Calvinistic doctrine)

    George Whitfield
    (1714-1770)

    John Bunyan
    (1628-1688)

    Rowland Hill
    (1745-1833)

    Charles Haddon Spurgeon
    (1834-1892)

    Robert Murray M'Cheyne
    (1813-1842)

Closing comments: This list comes from a number of lists I've found in my research. Some skeptics like to say, "Well you can make the dead believe whatever you want because they aren't there to vouch for themselves." This is true. However, I have done my homework and these men WERE Calvinists. You may view the listing with hyper-text links on my Calvinism page to read the writings by each of these authors regarding Calvinism.

Calvinism is synonymous with orthodox Christianity and evangelism.

    In Christ,

    Hi Whetstone;
I'm here to sharpen my self on you a little more.
I'm not impressed by men. They have nothing special about them at all. Seems men are still men but Christ was both man and God. God's word warns about trusting men.
Psa 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

Psa 62:8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
Psa 62:9 Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

Men just don't impress me. I myself have as much as they did maybe more.

Some men are working hard to bring other men the truth. Yet not one of them is worthy enough for me trust my very soul to a single one.
    May Christ Shine His Light On Us All;

Your missing the WHOLE point ILL...

Geez ... it's like talking to someone in a cult !

They same the same thing YOU do ILL... I trust in God ... those teachers were ALL wrong, they were all apostate.... hmmmm it's called pride. You fly in the face of the great teachers (which goes against what Paul wrote to Timothy) which GOD HAS SENT and say, "Nope, God didn't gift HIS church with anybody till ME! I'm the one who knows what is right, and ALL those teachers for thousands of years are wrong !"

    Man, talk about arrogance.

RC, we have to be patient with them. If we stoop to their level we won't get anywhere. I know I made it clear from the beginning what the list was about- but perhaps over time they will begin to see the truth without imposing their philosophies. Just be patient. Our labor won't be in vain. [IMG]

You call an obituary list PROOF?

Now if they were all buried in side by side graves with John Calvin, that would be pretty convincing evidence! But even then, not proof! Many of those on the list would be the first to chastise you for publishing such a list "as proof" of anything.

That research must have taken years!

Would you post the quotations, or citations of quotations, showing that some of those men called themselves Calvinists?

I would be most interested in limiting the field to: William Tyndale, John Huss, George Whitfield, William Carey, John A. Broadus, B.H. Carroll ?

    Hi Guero.

Did you want quotes and info from the men you listed or were those the ones you knew were Calvinists? Here some info about the men on the list (I won't supply every person since it would be WAY long):

It is common knowledge that Whitfield was a Calvinist. He was in constant discussions with John Wesley (an Arminian) of his time. Here's a link to get you started but you can just google search if you want more http://www.christianheroes.com/ev/ev013.asp

Tyndale was a Puritan- and the Puritans were Calvinists.

John Milton in Paradise Lost book III page 173:

"As my Eternal purpose hath decreed:
Man shall not quite be lost, but sav'd who will,
Yet not of will in him, but grace in me
Freely voutsaft; once more I will renew [ 175 ]"

Horatius Bonar in 'Grace Reigning in Election'

"There can be no grace when there is no sovereignty. Deny God's right to choose whom He will and you deny His right to save whom He will. Deny His right to save whom He will, and you deny that salvation is of grace. If salvation is made to hinge or any desert or fitness in man, seen or foreseen, grace is at an end."

'For His Grace and For His Glory' is a history of the doctrines of grace. Chapters Eight through Nine show us the pivotal point in Baptist understanding of Calvinism. B.H. Carroll was a staunch Calvinist. You can google for other sources showing Carroll was a Calvinist.

As I said in my original post you can either click through the links on my Calvinism page or present evidence that any of these men opposed Calvinism. It didn't take years of research. Just a little bit of time and Google [IMG]

    Dan,

Notice when we bring up history we can BACK OUR STATEMENTS UP? Yet when we ask them to go into history, they can't? They don't know it and don't DESIRE to know it... kind of like the natural man to God... they don't know Him and don't want to know Him so they just keep on arguing without fact.
