Barring the church level, can a woman do this?

    Quote from Dr. Bob:

Preacher = kerux or herald of tidings

Pastor = poimen or shepherd of flock

Preaching? Sure. Women do it all the time.

    Pastoring? Nada. Sorry.

I preach every time I sing a solo from the pulpit. Now if they took the music away...I know some who would question.

Barring the church level, I have been preached to (or should I say "preached at"?)by women all my life.

I agree with women preaching but, I don't think they can be a pastor. I think the only people that can pastor are women and children. Because, most men are tired of getting preched at by wives and mothers. -ducks and heads for cover- :D

Grammar correction: The question here is not whether a woman CAN preach or be a pastor, but whether a woman MAY preach or be a pastor.

CAN refers to ability or talent, MAY refers to permission or approval.

Was Pastor/Admin of our Christian School and helped give teachers a break by helping in classroom or on playground.

One little boy came running up to me and asked "Can I go to the bathroom?"

Of course, I asked, "I don't know, CAN you?"

He looked at me and said, "Never mind."

Oh, my. NOT the place for a grammar lesson.

Yes. women are not scripturally forbidden from quoting Dr Bob!

    Seriously, though:

Pastoring: There are some scriptures that suggest that women should not pastor. They're open to some interpretation, which , imo, should not be done here.

Preaching: There's no scriptural ban on women preaching. The Great Commission referrs to all. All are to preach the Gospel.

Actually, the above comment was more by way of a subtle reference to the fact that we weren't discussing the possibility that a woman could have the ability to perform either function, as she clearly might, but that she might not have the permission or approval to do so.

Sorry if I spoke out of turn.

If women are gifted to preach, if women are gifted to shepherd, as long as it isn't at the "all the church" level, why couldn't she shepherd a small group, for instance?

SW, presuming a scriptural ban on women pastoring, I see no scriptural reason why women can't shepherd in the manner you're suggesting. In fact, it was a women who ran the church group for divorced persons which I was attending for a year (a divorce recovery support group and bible study). Should I have dismissed her because of her gender? Of course not.

I still stand by my earlier post that a woman SHOULD preach, just not pastor.

Why can't a woman pastor? If an older woman teaches younger women to nurture live godly lives, couldn't this be considered pastoring-- tending to others as a shepherd tends to sheep? That doesn't mean she is necessarily a church overseer, imo. Pastoring is a gift and ministry. I think the word 'pastor' has been redefined since the Protestant Reformation to mean 'clergyman.'

    Link,

There are some scriptures that can be interpreted to support the idea that a woman may not pastor. While this issue is not a doctrinal or distinctive issue for Baptists, most Baptist fellowships, conventions, and congregations adhere to this interpretation. Personally, I don't agree with the interpretation, but as an SBC member, I'm bound to accept the intpertation as a matter of practical application for congregations of the SBC.

BTW, what you're suggesting, women pastoring women, shouldn't be a problem in most Baptist circles, though I know that some churches forbid women in these positions entirely. The discinctive of local autonomy guarantees the right of each congregation or fellowship to decide these things for themselves.

If you don't believe women can preach then you need to listen to the deacons in their meetings in most churches. They simply reveal what their wives have told them at home under another guise.

If one takes a look at civilizations around the world he will find as the number of women work so does the number in leadership until it reaches 50 percent then that number goes down. Where the women do all the work thew men lead.

If men will not lead then who are the men supposed to look for as examples in leadership? The women? That's the problem we have today. The men do not lead and the women take over while the men do not lead. Then the women become bulldogs and begin to try and lead their homes and husbands. I once pastored a church where this happened big time and the women would talk about how their husbands would do as they were told.
