Can Breastfeeding Protect from ADHD?

This should be of interest to mothers with infants or mothers to be.

While it has been known that breastfeeding enhances child development and protects from disease, a new study now suggests breastfeeding can also convey positive mental development for infants.

Specifically, breastfeeding may protect against the development of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) later in childhood.

ADHD is a common neurobehavioral disorders usually first diagnosed in childhood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active.

Although the origins of ADHD are not yet known, experts believe genetics and perinatal factors are major factors toward development of the condition.

In the research, a team of Israeli researchers compared breastfeeding history and other factors in a group of children 6-12 year of age diagnosed with ADHD to control groups of children who did not have ADHD.

The results demonstrated that overall, the children with ADHD were less likely to have been breastfed at 3 and 6 months of age than the children without ADHD.

This association between ADHD and lack of breastfeeding was statistically significant.

My one child who has ADD was not breastfed. She also has neurological issues that affected her speech so she couldn't breastfeed. I do always wonder what was the cause and effect.

I really hope the reason or reasons can be determined. The incidence has just exploded over the last 20 or so years. I have wondered if it is something that is being done environmentally, like the overuse of sprays on our food or the drugs used in our meat sources. I am convinced that all this cannot be really good for us.

Wonder of wonders, I agree with Crabby!

I too have often considered that all the "modern" conveniences such as chemical weed/bug controls, as well as all the chemicals to "enhance/protect" our food, along with simply our diet in general and all the medications we (I) take, have a major part in all the various ill we have?

(Whew! I've been reading Paul too much! )

My dd2 with ADD was breastfed and my dd1 who does not have ADD was bottle-fed due to tummy issues. So, I've not noticed that breastfeeding helped at all with the ADD.

What we have noticed is a sugar addiction/insulin issue that has a direct effect on the ADD. Too many carbs or eating at non-scheduled times during the day, eating or drinking artificial sweeteners, colors, and additives, or eating processed foods all trigger her ADD. We've also noticed that food allergies and sensitivities are more common with dd2, as are insane cravings for sugar and sleep problems. We've noticed this in other family members as well.

Our air soil and and water is polluted. Our food is full of poisons. No one but the people that make the vaccines know what's in them and now they seem to have one for everything from the flu to a hang nail. The kids grow up in front of the tube and playing video games cramming sugar, additives and preservatives down their throats.

The rates of cancer, diabetes, autism and obesity has skyrocketed in recent years. Amd we wonder why.

Could be that less people are dying in car collisions and living longer - thus getting older and more subject to the diseases mentioned.
(and no, I am not being facetious, as I was with he first statement!) Not saying less deaths is the main factor, but does contribute to the effect.

That doesn't explain why all the afore mentioned ailments are exploding among the very young. Just today I heard that one out of every four classrooms in America has an autistic child. When I was young autism was almost unheard of now it's everywhere. Allergies were never as bad as they are now. We have antibiotic immune superbugs now and it seems like every other kid in town is on an SSRI drug. Why?
