Carter Walks Back Claim That Obama Critics Are Racist

Former President Jimmy Carter on Thursday softened his claim that an "overwhelming portion" of criticism toward President Obama is race-based.

Carter said in an interview that he was only talking about a "fringe element" when he made the controversial remarks two weeks ago.

"I said those that had a personal attack on President Obama as a person, that was tinged with racism," Carter told CNN. "But I recognize that people that disagree with him on health care or the environment, that the vast majority of those are not tinged with racism."

Carter, knew exactly what he was talking about and he knows it. He just needs to go away and quit exposing his ignorance. How this guy ever got to be President of the US is beyond me. My mother, who voted for him, regrets her decision. My dad still chides her because he voted for Ford. My mom voted for him because he was a Southern Baptist and talked about being born again. Had she known more about his liberal politics and liberal christianity she would have never voted for him.

"Overwhelming majority" does not equal "fringe element," or there is no fringe element. One or the other of his words are wrong. I think, as in most cases, the first was what he meant, not the 'clarification' after there was a lot of flak about it.

He usually cares nothing about getting flak. I wonder if he received a call from Obama on this.

A blast from the past:

Time Magazine April 19, 1976 "Candidate Carter: I Apologize"

"Slamming a fist against his desk, Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson last week postponed plans to endorse Jimmy Carter and angrily exclaimed: "Is there no white politician I can trust?" Jesse Jackson, director of Chicago's Operation PUSH, called Carter's views "a throwback to Hitlerian racism." Mayor Richard Hatcher of Gary, Ind., declared: "We've created a Frankenstein's monster with a Southern drawl, a more cultured version of the old Confederate at the schoolhouse door." Added Civil Rights Activist Bayard Rustin of New York: "He is only giving ammunition to those who would divide America. [He has] a big smile with no heart."
What outraged the black leaders was Carter's ill-considered remarks last week about neighborhood integration.
One of his phrases, "ethnic purity," particularly offended many blacks and whites. . . ."

You know, that's funny because I honestly do not remember if I voted for him then or not.

I DID feel very much as your Mom did, so there is a good possibility that I did vote for him. Conversely I was very attracted to Clinton his first time 'round but there was just "something" about him that didn't ring true, so I KNOW I didn't vote for him!!!

Not sure if I was more discerning later, or if I learned something from Carter.

He does have a severe case of verbal diarrhea though, and he has a bad habit of starting mouth before engaging brain!:tongue3:

Uh, he was voted in.

Why do you have to be insulting? But just in case you were not, I'll spell it out for you. Maybe the California air is thin today. My question more so is how in the world could the people of the U.S. have been so duped? I liked Ronnie, voted for him the second time, but a monkey could have beat Jimmy when he came up for reelection. Then again I ask the same question about the current President. However, I'm pretty sure he too will be a one term president and I'd take him over Jimmy any day of the week.

It was a terrible thing to vote for the first president who openly declared himself to be a born-again Christian, isn't it? Once again you show that your politics are more important to you than your "Christianity."

I guess questioning someone's salvation is OK for you to do, Freedom? JustChristian? Alatide? Whoever?

Let's try this example. (It's likely a waste of time, but maybe a miracle will happen):

I'm a hospital administrator. I have two candidates for heart surgeon. One is an outstanding surgeon...but I am unsure about his faith. The other is a good Christian, as well as a med school dropout. Am I a pagan for voting for candidate #1?

Just because someone is a Christian does not mean they are cut out for the job.

While you're busy hurling insults, being infantile, and questioning the salvation of fellow posters, put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Just because someone says "I'm born again" doesn't automatically qualify them to be President of the United States. Nor does being a Southern Baptist. Yet, some voted for him based solely on these two characteristics. Then again, Nixon's forced resignation helped Cater too. But, I'm sure that many, had they known the dud Carter would turn out to be (and still is), would have gladly voted for Ford.

I don't have to join in your Democrat bashing games. People here talk about wanting Christian leaders and then endlessly bash one of the few real Christian presidents we've had in my lifetime.

Why don't right you just come out and admit it? You only care about far right political power.

Just what is Carter's "liberal Christianity." I understand you hate him because he's a Democrat but what is your understanding of his religious beliefs?

Bumped for JustChristian v. 3.0...so he can ignore the pertinent issue, again.
