Cassette to CD

I'm looking for a decent program for copying cassette tapes to CD. One that will block out noise, etc.

Can you burn a CD with Audacity?

Audacity has quite a good instruction manual online.

But to answer your question, I do not think it can burn it to a CD directly. However, Windows XP should let you burn an audio cd pretty easily. Make sure you burn it as an audio cd and not data.

I downloaded Audacity. I am using my walkman with a jack from the headphone input, to my computer microphone input and recording it onto Audacity. I also downloaded a free CD burner that I will use after I'm finished recording to Audacity.

I was going to recommend this as well. Geeks.com also has it.
It would be something that you could buy, convert all your tapes and then resell it (unless you're in the habit of buying cassette tapes now )

Audacity is a great option for that and it works on all platforms.
For burning, check out iTunes. It is free and a great program. Also includes an mp3 encoder.
Of course you can also store your music library on your PC with that.

Audacity comes free with the ability to save to wav and a couple of other formats. You can burn a wav to a cd.

If you want to keep the files on your computer, though, because wav files are so huge you would be better saving straight to MP3.

To do this with audacity you will need to download the lame.dll.

1. Go to this page (http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~raa110/audacity/lame.html) and download the lame-3.96.1 file.

The page has instructions on how to install it which are pretty straight forward.

Give it a try and see how it goes... if you want.

You can save the files into different qualities of MP3 - 16kb being the lowest quality and 320kb being the highest.

You can also convert vinyl records to CD. I have done it using a turntable, and amplifier, and cables to go into my sound card (available at Radio Shack or other electronics parts store). Software to take out pops helps too.

Thank you for your help. I think I've got it figured out. I'm saving them as wav files then burning them right away to CD. If I want to store them on my computer, I'll save them as mp3.
