I have some stuff on cassette tape that I want to transfer to my computer so that I can put it on CD ROM. From computer to CD ROM, I understand. I am assuming that I need to get some additional software to be able to transfer from a cassette and create a digital file in the computer. Does anyone have any idea what kind of software I need to get to do this? Now, here is the real question: does anyone know if there is FREE software available to do this? But I'll take an answer to either question if someone knows. Thanks!!!

If what you want to record is less than one minute, you can just use the Sound Recorder that comes with Windows. Otherwise, you have to get another sound editor/recorder. There are dozens and dozens out there. I use SoundForge (here) but there's tons of other choices. Go to download.com and just browse their audio section.

Once the software is in place, all you do is connect your tape player to the line-in jack on your sound card, and then make sure in your volume settings that your line-in isn't muted.

Which, I might point out, is not as simple as it sounds. You'll need to pay up to $10 to get the cable.

But it's worth it, especially if you have a lot of tapes you want to change over to CD.

Good luck. I haven't used a cassette since the TI 99/4A curled up and died.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have some sermons on cassette tape which I am trying to put into my computer and then to CD. Some of the suggestions had time limits which did not suit my purpose (which, if I had explained it, I might have gotten better advice). I will try some of the later suggestions.

To record from cassette to your computer:

    1. Connect a tape deck to your computer using the line-in jack of the computer.

    2. Have the necessary software. I use a program called "WinDAT" that I have had for years. Using WinDAT I can record CD quality sound to a WAV file. I then use Easy CD Creator to make my audio CDs.
