Casting out Satan

    Does the practice of casting out demons still happen as it did in the bible?

    Casting out Demons is a commen practice in some denominations. Yes!! It is normally not done at church though.

    Certainly not out of believers. And as far as I know, Baptists do not do this.

    There are no instructions in the NT letters to the churches regarding this; casting out of demons was done by Jesus to show his authority over demons. He gave this power directly to his apostles. There is disagreement in the church over whether believers should do this today and it should not divide us. But some believe that Christians today also have this power, while other believers do not.

    One of the difficulties is determining whether or not the person is possessed. In the bible, many of the possessed people had almost supernatural strength, were throwing themselves into fires, or doing some other kind of weird thing. I think today that many mentally people get fixated on demons (in fact, this is a symptom of some forms of schizophrenia)and I think some of them are thought to be possessed when they aren't. Others claim they are possessed to get attention. I have met several in the last 2 categories.

    It says in Mark 16:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe:In my name they will drive out demons;...........I have read in these posts that Baptists do not do this.I will have to conclude that: A)There is a shortage of Satan possessing humans B)There is scripture that says Satan will no longer be possessing people C)Baptists are not believers

    Jacob, funny though that in not one letter to the churches in the NT does anyone say anything about the practice of driving out demons?

    To MEE:my response was for StefanM. Music4Him I believe was asking StefanM to explain how Mark 16:9-20 was "added" to the bible.I should address whom I speak to I realize,but Im still computer stupid.But I type very fast using both fingers!lol

    Acts 16-17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation.
    18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

    But as we can see from the above scripture, it was done in the NT, after Jesus was gone, so I am sure it can and should be done today.

    The reality of this world is that there is a battle being fought in the spiritual world that few if any of us can see.

    Demons are real, they inhabit and bother people today, and if you don't believe it then the Devil has you right where he wants you!!

    I also find it interesting that she was declaring that they WERE of God, but Paul perceived the demon nevertheless. It's also interesting in the verses after that, that her Masters were so upset because Paul had taken away the ability for her to make money for them!!

    Wait a minute. I'm Baptist, SBC in fact, and I do know people who have driven out demons. They tend to be in mission fields where people play with the Occult much more often.

    One missionary I know who was in the field for about 40 years told me that when they went into the mission field they tended to think casting out demons was an act put on my side-shows, but then they realized that Satan is still alive and Christ is still alive, and then they encountered demonic activity. (Example: They worked in a village where a very respected tribal elder became a Christian. This man helped them reach many people whose doors would have otherwise been closed to them. He died in a canoe accident. A few days after his death a man reported that he was visited by this elder in the form of a wolf with cloven hooves, and the wolf told the man that they should not visit with the missionaries anymore. They tried to ignore it, then more and more villagers began to talk about creatures visiting them, claiming to be the elder who was telling them Christ was false. So, they prayed about it, and decided to step out on scripture. They did not make a "huge show" of casting out the demon, they did this, quietly, just Christians, in a prayerful manner. They said they could feel the evil and anger in the room, and then they felt the peace and love of Christ in the room, and the next bible study, all those who had left because of the "vision" they had, returned. Please note, they didn't "cast a demon out of one person," they literally prayed to cast the demon that was disquising itself as the elder from the village. They didn't do this in front of the non-believers, they did it prayerfully and quietly.) Since then, I meet many missionaries who report having witnessed or participated in the casting out of demons.

    Not every Christian has the same mission or gift as every other Christian. Perhaps asking people who are called to teach about this gift is asking the wrong group.

    That's right Texas Sky, I agree with you! There are more Demons "recognized" in third world countries. However, it is my opinion that there are a lot around us that nobody knows about.

    Another thing you said is true also. You don't have to make a big deal out of casting them out. Some people are afraid to try it, but there's one thing I know, my Jesus is stronger than any demon and they can't over power me because Jesus will protect me.

    I don't recommend however that an unsaved person try it!!
