To get good distance casting you don’t need to wind up a huge one.

Rod type has a lot to do with it, and line thickness, but also the reel type and technique. I’ve seen blokes even taking a run up with hand lines. Bloke ended up with one of those Japanese hooks stuck in the meat of his thumb, made of those astoundingly strong alloys the doctors couldn’t deal with. I had to get my special bolt cutters from my Ute to snip the hook at the barb for them to get it out.

I mean get that stuck in you. Not having proper technique can badly hurt you.

With rods I generally use the pendulum technique for distance.

Overhead reels you can slick up the bearings with zippo lighter fluid, line just screams off. Or you can get those new ceramic bearings, expensive but amazing.

Sort the gear out for long casting first, then practice proper techniques.
