The sexual abuse crisis that engulfed the Roman Catholic Church in the last 12 months has now spread to nearly every American diocese and involves more than 1,200 priests, most of whose careers straddle a sharp divide in church history and seminary training.

Those are among the conclusions drawn from an extensive New York Times survey of documented cases of sexual abuse of minors by priests over the last six decades.

The survey, covering cases through Dec. 31, 2002, compiled the names and histories of 1,205 accused priests. It counted 4,268 people who have claimed publicly or in lawsuits to have been abused by priests, though experts say there are surely many more who have remained silent.

The survey, the most complete compilation of data on the problem available, provides a statistical framework for viewing the sexual abuse crisis against the modern history of the American Catholic Church. It found, for example, that most priests accused of abuse were ordained between the mid- 1950's and the 1970's, a period of upheaval in the church, when men trained in the traditional authoritarian seminary system were sent out to serve in a rapidly changing church and social culture.

Most of the abuse occurred in the 1970's and 1980's, the survey found.

It is my understanding that the Roman Catholic Church originally introduced the requirement of celibacy so that priests could not pass any material possessions down to children but that all would stay within church ownership.

If this is true, then we are right back to Paul's warning that the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

What is terribly sad, to me, is that this kind of thing could not happen -- at least as much -- if the parishioners were not literally taught to NOT think for themselves about anything. As the one person remarked in the article, it was as though talking to a priest was like talking to Jesus Himself! And no one would dare question Him!

I am also reminded of the ancient practice in some cultures of castrating young men so that they would be proper participants for later homosexual activities. The Catholic church did not do anything physically to their young priests-in-training, but in keeping them cloistered and ruled the way they did, they ended up doing something of the same psychologically to them.

In other words, it was not that some of the Catholic priests were, by accident, homosexual; it was more that the system created homosexual priests.

How much better to follow Christ than an organization of men.

    Romans 1

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.
26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
28Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.

The Roman Catholic Church plays the role of Rome so well you'd hardly know the difference.
