Catholic Leaders Challenging Obama Administration

So between the Army's edict to military Catholic chaplains to not read the military archdiocese's letter to their parishioners, and this statement that Catholic leadership will be looking to harness the power of 70 million catholic voters, what do you think the outcome will be?

I would be greatly surprised if the Obama administration's requirements about birth control survive this; but I'm also questioning how this will affect the campaign and election. It's probably too early to have an effect that will last all the way to election; will it even be remembered come election time?

And if the administration holds to its birth control edict, do we have a possibility of Obama being voted out of office? Who do you think the Catholics would get behind?

Why would the Catholics even care? And why are they making a fuss over birth control? They could care less about all the babies being slaughtered in the wombs, if they did, they wouldn't have voted for Obama in the first place. They are hypocrites! ( I speak to the majority who the records show voted for him, some, a few I guess, had the courage to stand up for the unborn and didn't vote for Obama.)

Cathilic voters are no different from many Baptists who talk the talk on the murder of the unborn , but don't walk the walk.

The Catholic Church itself stands for life. It's people are hypocrites - but the leaders are not. I have to say that I respect the Catholic church for their stand - they are more vocal than any Evangelical church on this matter. We would do well to learn from them. How many Evangelical churches are standing against this law? How many churches even have health care plans that they make sure do not pay for abortions? I'm sure not many.

I agree with this... however I would amend it to say that some Catholics do not vote in harmony with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Also many people say that they are Catholic simply because their parents were Catholic and because they were baptised when they were babies - not because they actually attend a Catholic church.

Yes, that's true - I'm sorry I painted with too broad a stroke. :)

Are Catholics really the most vocal or are they because they can be. When you're sittin' on as much swag as they are, the Vatican sitting on more wealth than most nations, you can be the standard of anything you choose.

I usually call them country club Catholics. One of those things the white-collar 40-something or 50-something suburbanite does because everyone else in the neighborhood and everyone else at work belongs to Our Lady of the Devine Holy Sacrament of the Shrine of the Madonna Catholic Church in Frontenac, MO (or add your own Catholic church name located in your own wealthy suburb here).

I have never heard such a thing claimed about Catholics before.

People go to the local Catholic Church because other people in the neighborhood or from work do?

Very common in the St Louis area. I have friends in that area that do just this. This isn't a knock on the church. People do in fact add organizations to their portfolio and church membership is one of them.
