CCM as a Ministry?

    CCM is actually what brought me back to a renewed faith in Christ. I had strayed away but I started listening to CCM after a friend unknowingly introduced me to it. The more I listened the more I wanted to understand where all this passion was coming from that these artists have. I started attending church again and am heavily involved in it. There are so many outlets used to pull us back to the Lord and I guess that was the one for me. I listen to it all day at work and in the car. It's much better than secular music because of it's subject matter. You can't get depressed about that!

    I came to the Lord after being introduced to a Christian Heavy Metal Band called "Sacred Warrior". I have only good things to say for CCM ;)

    Do you listen to Way FM? It is out of Nashville, but I think it is available in your area as well (they broadcast here, and several other places from Florida to Oregon).

    I love Way! Especially Macia & Jeff in the mornings!

    All beauty is God's beauty. The earliest Christians concluded this, and thus in the Jewish tradition, sang their psalms. From these came the liturgical and traditional music of the church, by which many became followers of Christ. Amen to God that even today his beauty, though expressed differently by us, is still winning hearts! Gloria dei!

    CCM was not part of my conversion but after accepting Christ I was introduced to it. I used to play in secular groups. After that I never played secular music again.

    Dear Chipsgirl,

    Like Brooks (Untangled),CCM wasn't a part of my conversion (1971) since it was just "starting up" and nobody heard of it in Pittsburgh,Pa. back then.

    But,what was happening musically was the "Folk Mass" and I liked the music and it was at that time that the Lord put it on my heart to play the conga drums for Him in church.

    I'm on the fence about this. I saw a good church destroyed after allowing a rock band in. All the older folks, who had good jobs, and had been members for years, left, and took their tithes with them. The younger folks were not so apt to give, the church went broke, and now nobody attends.

    I'm not saying it's evil or anything. Just an observation.

    I'm assuming there is more history behind the story than "a good church destroyed after allowing a rock band in". Was this a CCM band? Maybe it wasn't appropriate for that church at that time but it does work in lots of churches!

    No history, or hidden message. The drums came in, the older folks left.

    it probably hurt their ears?

    Were the guys in the band so insensitive to the situation that they didn't see that coming?

    There is a time and a place for everything. That was not an appropriate place for a rock band obviously

    You have to find a nice balance to suit the young and the old. I like the idea of having a classic service in the morning and then a contemporary one that night. I go to a contemporary church and love it but I can see how it might seem offensive to my grandmother. I do wonder if the move towards contemporary churches will start to phase out hymn books. That would be horrible!

    Dear Chipsgirl,

    My church has 2 services,one at 8:15am that has hymns only,and the 11am service which is a musically "blended" service,with contemporary worship music,traditional hymns,and sacred compositions that range from Sarum plainchant (circa 1000 A.D.) to contemporary sacred composers John Rutter,John Taverner,and Arvo Paart.

    My pastor and the music director prayerfully select the music for each Sunday service and the hymns played at the 8:15am service are played at the 11am.

    I play the conga drums and other hand drums in the music ministry and the "P&W" group is anything but a "rock group."

    CCM is definetly a ministry. I myself am a CCM aritist, solo but more with the band im in. We use our music for the purpose of serving and worshiping God and we wont stop doing so.

    Honestly i dont think that i would be as involved in my christian life as i am now without music.

    Wow... what a sad commentary on the American church fellowship! Here is my two cents worth on the "good church destroyed..." Take a read:

    1. There is no "good church" anywhere. Remember, it was Jesus Christ who made it clear that there was NO ONE who was good.

    2. If it only took a rock band to "destroy" that church... that "church" was in spiritual trouble already.

    3. All the older folks left. Good! Maybe the younger ones will now walk by faith and not worry about some cynical old timer "Lording their wills" over younger believers with their "tithes and offerings." It was Jesus Himself who said that it is more blessed to GIVE than to receive.

    4. The church went broke? Good! Let the younger ones walk by faith instead of their money! So what if the church has very few "members" left. It was Jesus Christ who reminds us that it only takes two or three coming together in His Name for Him to be amongnst us.

    5. Incredibly... whatever happened to all those older folks mentoring the younger ones. Oh, I get it! They judged the younger ones spiritually on whether they sang John Wesley style or Petra style. Hmmm... I vote to worship with the younger ones.

    Disclaimer: I am an "old saint" of +30 years. I believe those younger ones could show us old timers what it used to be like when we were on fire for the Lord- instead of becoming those judgmental and cynical tarts preaching a dusty religion.

    I just went on a mission trip to NYC and stayed at a church that caters to people who are really struggling with drugs, homelessness, etc... A big part of the services was CCM. The people of the church were so into the music and you could tell that, like for me, it brought them closer to God. Every morning I would wake up to hear one of the church members walking around the church singing a CCM song.
