For some reason whenever I watch a DVD or record onto a CD or DVD I am having some issues:

    1. Watching DVD's is impossible as it is really sluggish and the audio is stuttered. At the same time the mouse movement is slow and trying to use any other programs is very slow.

    2. Similar issues when recording onto media, everything slows down.

    ANy advice would be appreciated.

I have tried re-installing the drivers but it does not seem to make any difference.

I'm guessing your using windows XP. Probably what has happened is your DVD drive's IDE controller has reverted from DMA mode to PIO and it is not getting enough throughput to playback smoothly. Check on the advanced settings tab in the properties of your IDE channels in the device manager. It's easy to fix, but it requires a few steps. For some reason, it won't let you just change it back, you have to remove the IDE controller from device manager and reboot to allow windows to redetect it, and then you should be able to change it.

Thanks James, the Secondary IDE was set on PIO for some reason. I'd checked the primaries, but not the secondaries...

I'd change to Vista if I had the money, but it has its own problems, or Linux, but the ones I have tried just don't work smoothly enough for someone who can't be bothered to fool with it.

    ANyway, thanks. :)

It's a no-win situation with windows ;) I think the reason the controller reverts to PIO mode is because it encounters too many read errors. I suppose for a hard-drive this is a good idea, but on a DVD drive, the errors are usually due to scratched disks.

No, won't do it... must resist. Reasons are as follows:

    1. 90% of the software I use works perfectly and is free. Mac does not have the user base to build professional free software. The desktop publishing is the only problem I have had, and I think this Scribus program may be the solution.

    2. Have you ever noticed that grin that Mac users get... most anyway. If I got a Mac I am afraid I would become one of "them".

    :)

BY the way, my problem is solved and things are running perfectly.

Isn't there a mac version of Scribus?
Maybe I am thinking of something else.

I couldn't watch any dvd's on my computer and downloaded VideoLan (got a little orange cone like they put on the road) -- it's open source and works like a charm.

I don't know if that will fix your problem, but it fixed mine. I have XP.

C4K, I'll let know about Scribus.

Dale-C, I am not sure if Scribus does a Mac version.

MC, I have videolan, but not even that worked. It is a nice little program though, not very pretty, but functional.

In the end the problem was with the IDE settings and James' suggestions helped.

I use RealPlayer to download streaming video (just available in the version 11 beta), Windows Media Player to organise and play most music and Quicktime only when I really have to, but Real Player does that so I tend not to use Quicktime at all.

Just as an aside, I have a batch of free media programs that:

    1. Convert any video format (including Quicktime) into AVI. From AVI the free Windows Media Player does fine.

    2. Rips DVD's regardless of region etc.

    3. Converts ripped DVD's into other formats.

Of course, the above programs I have never used for illegal purposes... because that would be wrong... and I would not do that... because I am a Baptist...

    That's the one!

I'm enjoying the Glorious Twelfth by the way. Are you holding a mini-parade through Milton today?

Glad you are enjoying Orangefest. Isn't that the new name for it? Sadly Milton knows no such pleasures.

You're just going to start a parade in Milton, I am sure William would march with you and play the bagpipes.

As for the picture... I'll retaliate. For the 1200th time in the last month Quicktime and iTunes is updating. Without permission it just pops up - I hate it.

Anyway, all is well with my CD/DVD player. :)

I recorded 75 minutes of BBC coverage of the Belfast parade, I'll send a copy if you want. :)

See, even your pop up blocker doesn't work.

Thanks for the offer, but I have already about 40 years worth stored in my mind, and I don't think the general format has changed much.

Dialed my local bank branch couple days ago. The menu told me to press 2 if I wanted to talk to a banking specialist. Pressed 2. Heavy accent asked for my account number. I said which one, she said can you give me your account number, I said which one, I have several accounts with you, can you give me your account number, so I asked where are you located geographically? She replied in the Phillipines, can you give me your account number. I asked how I got to the Phil. when I called my local branch. She said you were transferred ------- duuuuuh do you think

What I didn't do was listen to the WHOLE menu, the local branch was choice 3

    Oh I love technology :tonofbricks:
