Chasing the Wind

In Ecclesiastes, we find the phrase "chasing the wind" to indicate an act of futility. (Ecc. 1:14) No one can catch the wind, it is beyond our grasp.

But in a very different sense, we are to pursue God, who is spirit, so "chasing the wind" might convey our pursuit of God. But is this also an exercise in futility?

In Luke we learn that many will seek the narrow door, but not find it! In Romans 9 we learn those seeking God by works will not find Him, but those following the law of faith are successful.

And, in Matthew we learn of people who had found the narrow or strait way and were pushing into it, but we thrown off the path by false teaching. (Matthew 23:13)

In A. W. Tozer's book, The Pursuit of God, we find an enlightening discussion not only of why we thirst for a deeper experience of God in our lives, but at least some of the barriers that hinder us as we chase the Spirit of God. The way is difficult as we must set aside "self" and our smug convictions. Mistaken doctrine we hold dear are like man-made veils that hide the reality of God behind the facade of men.

Some theologians refer to our quest as "progressive sanctification." And as Paul and the author of Hebrews taught, some immature Christians stall out, thinking they have arrived, when they have yet to take but a few steps.
