Checkout Counters

By the store, by the parents buying them, by television, by peers, by society, by liberals, by moderates, by silent conservatives, by movies, by books, by Satan, by me (I work in one of those stores),... The list could go on and on. The biggest problem IMHO, is that we Christians can't discern right and wrong anymore. Just look at the threads on this Baptist board about tattoos, gambling, drinking, homosexuality, we can't even figure out whether a piano is a good thing or a tool of the devil. We have been brainwashed into thinking that tolerance means that we must accept as OK anything we disagree with.

I know that if you have enough complaints go to the right person at the stores, they will try to appease the customer. I knew of many stores that moved those racks to a section away from direct view of these customers it offended. This world will not be rid of those offensive things, but we don't have to be offended every time we enter those businesses. My register receipts in view of the store owner and with the possibility of those receipts going to the competition is a little much for them to turn a cheek to. Along with a little honey on top does get results. But it took more that one person and more than one visit, with a smile.

I go to Aldi's. I have to bag my own groceries; but it is cheaper and they don't sell magazines.

Walls, you're referring to mags like "cosmo" et al. Yes, I think it's technically pornograpic (albeit, probably in the category of 'soft porn').

I've long been of the opinion that pornography geared towards men is socially taboo, but pornography geared towards women is socially acceptible. Go figure.

 

That is when it is up to us to teach our children that just because by social norms something is acceptable does not mean that it is acceptable by God's standards. It has become more difficult now than ever and will continue to become worse.

And we just contributed to the purchase of a grand piano for our church.

This phrase just caught my eye.

As to magazines in the check out aisles, if they offend you, it would be a good idea to tell the store manager, but honestly, I am so busy loading and unloading groceries that I can't tell you what kind of magazines are in the check out aisle.

If I have my granchildren with me, I am too busy saying "no we don't need any more candy" to look at the magazines.

It would be good if we could control and get rid of all offensive material, but we know it is impossible so the solutIon is to teach our own children, grandchildren, and any students that we may have and to set an example for them.

Oh yes, and further, I dislike very much to bag my own groceries or even carry them out. I'm getting very conservative (lazy) in my old age.

 

Last week at the checkout counter in Buehler's I told my kids "Oh no, don't look at those mostly naked people on those magazine covers!" Then as people looked on I proceeded to turn them all backwards and say "Don't worry, I'll fix it, just don't look for a minute". I turned all the half naked ones around, and on one the back cover had one too, lol! So I covered it with a gardening magazine, then told the kids "It's ok, you can turn around now". Nobody said anything, one old man was laughing.
Next time I go in if they're there I'll take it to the next step and burn them. JUST KIDDING! I'll talk to the manager.

My local Ralphs puts modesty covers onthe fronts of them, if they contain a photo or headline that would be graphic. The manager tells me he'll do this with any magazine, out of respect to the public. He's done it with Maxim and Sports Illustrated from time to time as well.

 

Amen, Gina! We do the same thing! I like magazines, but it is fairly embarrassing, even sickening, to see the mostly naked folk and the topics blarring in bold, neon letters! Ick!
My kids have even been known to turn a few magazines around!

I never buy that junk they stick at the counter, all except on occasion those little cook books.

 

I admit it, I've been known to buy an occasional copy of Cosmo.

I can respect the desires of some to turn mags like that around if they feel convicted about it, but I would not agree that they are porn geared toward women. Yes the magazines are geared toward women (most of the ones at the checkout counters, anyway - I've never seen Maxim and Gear and the like at the grocery store), but most of the half-naked people within are . . . women. And honestly? I don't know too many lesbians who are buying Cosmo for the pictures or the articles.

 

Similar, if not exactly the same problem.....
A few years ago, I purchased some petrol at a local garage, only to find packs of contraceptives on the counter, now, I am not so tall, 4` 10" and a lot of youngsters are as tall as , or even taller than I am, these things were right in my face. I thought to complain to the owner and I managed to get his phone no. and complained to him, the goods were removed from view. If the books you are refering to are not suitable for youngsters to see, and some of them these days definitely are not, would not a LOUD complaint to management do the trick?

 

Then, I can admit to buying a copy of Maxim . I should refine my previous statement to be a little more specific and say that they're not outright pornography, but they have content that can be considered pornographic. That said, the word "pornographic" itself often becomes a catch phrase for anything that has sexual content. And for me, sexual content in and of itself is not evil. Sexual content designed and marketed for the purpose of sexual arousal/gratification would be the deciding factor for me.

I remember when I was married have an arguement with my wife about her having Cosmo lying around where our 8yo daughter has access to them (I didn't think the headlines weren't appropriate for an 8yo girl). She saw no reason to move them. So I purchased a copyof playboy (Maxim was still new) and put in in the stack with the cosmo. To make a long story short, my point was made.
