Cherokee expel blacks

    Some 250,000 members of the Cherokee Nation have
    disenfranchised some 21,000 black Cherokee freedmen
    and former slaves.

    Here is a Washington Post article prior to the 3 March Election
    (the motion did pass: former slaves can't be members
    of the Native American Cherokee Nation /largest of the
    2007 tribes of the Western {Oklahoma}Band of the Cherokee/ ).

    This is going to backfire for them like it did for the Seminoles a few years ago. First of all they have been part of the Cherokee nation since an 1866 Treaty. A vote to cast them out now is ridiculous. It is like the US taking a vote to determine whether some groups of citizens can continue to be citizens if they cannot prove they are 100% American. Kind of a scary thought, if you think about it. After all these years it is going to be pretty difficult to determine full blooded Cherokee anyway.

    In the Seminoles case the US didn't recognize the election and cut off pretty much all ties with the Seminole nation, i.e. federal money. The straw that broke the camels back was when the US refused to allow the Seminoles to conduct gaming becuase they were no longer recognized by the US government. They shaped up pretty quickly. I suspect the Cherokees will as well.

    No more ridiculous than the families of former slaves demanding monetary "reparations" for what happened over 140 years ago.

    That may be so, but it is a moot point becuase no reparations have been given, nor are they likely to. Nothing is gained or lost. Besides there are many people who do not even believe reparations are practical let alone feasable, although an apology would go a long way. Not necessarily for slavery, as evil as that was, but for the years of struggle after they were supposedly given citizenship and rights.

    This is obviously a reaction to the current trend of every Tom Dick and Harry claiming to be Indian, and then proceeding to set up a casino. Apparently the Cherokees didn't wish to lend their creedence to such activities. Also, I think that the BIA overstepped their authority when they interfered in the Seminoles actions regarding who is or isn't a Seminole. After all, blood quotient is a valid manner in which to decide, and at various times, the government has used it when assigning land to tribal members. Of course, in actual practice it would be tricky to implement. Just my opinion.

    Only it appears you should use (as a practical matter)
    instead of 'every Tom Dick and Harry claiming to be Indian
    you might want to say 'every Nguyn, Lem, and Pham
    claiming to be Indian'.
