Remember hearing Frank Sinatra sing about Chicago? Here (in part) are the lyrics...

Chicago, Chicago that toddling town
Chicago, Chicago I will show you around
I love it bet your bottom dollar you'll lose the blues in Chicago, Chicago
The town that Billy's Sunday couldn't shut down

Update:

Fourth of July weekend toll: 82 shot, 14 of them fatally, in Chicago

From what I read Billy Sunday was quite an outspoken preacher. He came down hard on the whiskey peddlers. Billy Sunday has been in paradise for a long time now. I wonder how ole' Blue Eyes is doing?

I remember being in the military back in the 1960's and walking past all the drunks passed out on the streets late at night. A terrible sight to see.

God blessed you Billy Sunday and for sure your preaching lead a lot of folks to the Lord.

A quite a few decades ago I cared for my infirmed grandmother in the weeks before she died.

Up until that time I never got to talk to her as an adult.
It was a special time for us both.
I quizzed her on her life and her faith, trying to assess whether she had made a decision of faith.

As a youth she lived in Chicago.
She related that as a teen, a Baptist friend invited her to go see Billy Sunday

She saw him a couple of times and responded to his sermons.

I planted a church in West Englewood.

The people there were all kicked out of the projects, that the City was tearing down.

Last Dec. I was there for a visit, and the families testified of how their children were college graduates, instead of gangsters.
Most are married, a rarity in W.E.

Where sin did abound, grace did much more abound.

There is Hope, Halelujah!

He was a life-long Catholic, excommunicated at least once, for being married 4 times. But he was pretty private about any faith he had.

He was great in "From Here To Eternity".

Not much has changed over the years. Still passed out on the streets.

I am so glad I no longer live there.
