Has your church ever been out of whatever it is your church offers for communion? What did you replace it with? [IMG]

We ran out of the little 1/2 inch square crackers you get at the bookstore--so some deacon got the bright idea of Premium crackers crushed up!

One of our deacon's wives was sorta in charge of the grape juice--well, she decides she's gonna save a little money--so she bought the Wal-mart brand of grape juice instead of Welch's.

Our's does! Use Welches that is. I've never thought of it. I don't think anyone would notice if we didn't use that brand. We have communion about once a year, so since it's so long before the next one, no one would notice. Although I have a teacher who is Wesleyan, and he said the ladies in charge of communion left the juice out for about a year {didn't put it up after the last communion, and well..from what I can gather the service was um, very interesting! I think that stuff got a litte fermitted, acording to his rendition of it! I'm just glad the ladies at my church use FRESH grape juice!

Our uses Mogen David Wine and Unleavened Bread... And I have never know our church to run out of either... The sisters make the unleavened bread... I know some Primitive Baptist Churches use homemade wine... But grape juice and crackers... NEVER!... Ask any PB who is a true PB!... You may disagree but you asked!... Welch's was truly the original grape juice, before that it was all wine. So I guess it's a sense of respect for the original defiler of the last supper? ;)

I'm still waiting to have breadsticks and grape soda for the last supper. Why not? It's not like we eat and drink the right sacraments anyway.

Most of the churches I have attended all my life use some form of grape juice, usually welches--because it is good, and that little square of --I guess it is bread, but it gets matted up in my teeth and there isn't enough grape juice to swill it out.

The church I attend now has used a variety of things--pita bread, Saltines, oyster crackers.

The Ukrainian church uses real wine and a loaf of bread crumbled up.

Welch's was developed by zealous christians who were caught up in the temperance movement. It was the nearest thing to "wine" without being fermented wine.

We use non-alcholic wine (I prefer burgundy to rose) and matzoh.

IF the elements are NOT important, then why not use "wonder bread and milk" or "pizza and pepsi"?

Our church uses grape juice, I'm not sure of the brand, probably Welchs.

Our Pastor's wife and daughters make the motzoh bread and the Pastor crumbles it right before serving.

We have never run out.

Blessings,
Sue

We use Welches and matsa.

As a deacon I prepare the communion plate (just seems right doesn't it). I once was unprepared for communion. Our Senior Pastor was on vacation and I was told months earlier that communion would be a week later. Well things changed and I was never told. There I was, one hour before service and lots of work to do.

A few weeks earlier I purchased some of those pre-cut wafers to see if they would be acceptable. I didn't like their taste though so I had put them aside. Well I used them out of necessity.

I only got a few comments, mostly from the formerly Catholic believers who may have closely associated the wafer with what they had used before and didn't like the memories.

I never tried it again.
Beer and Pizza, hummmmm....

The Montanists used cheese instead of wine, but we wouldn't want to be accused of puttin' on the Ritz, would we?

We use Grape Juice and Crackers.

One time at a Pentecostal church I was involved with, the youth group leader wanted to make a point about the emblems not being the actual body of Christ. Hence they served communion with Crinkle Cut Chips and Coca-Cola!

Needless to say, it caused a huge fight and many people refused to take of communion.

Ab - It's not a light thing for me. I personally believe the elements are steeped in symbolism (though I reject any sort of mystical or real "presence" in them).

Unleavened juice is a contradiciton. No such thing. Juice by its nature (welchs or kool aid) has leaven. Fermentation changes this yeast and sugar into alcohol, which may then be removed for those not wishing to drink any alcoholic beverage.

Unleavened bread is readily avaiable, but that is NOT the boxed tasteless cardboard from the Christian book store. Can't think of anyone who would call that "bread".

While Jews observed the ritual of Passover annually, the local assemblies in Acts practiced the Lord's Supper - distinct from Passover - every time they met. That, too, would be my choice . . but haven't been able to lead the church into that.

It is very meaningful to me and not something to be considered lightly or frivolously (like the pizza/pepsi crowd).

We've never run out. The wafers we buy from Cokesbury come in about a bajillion (that's the technical term). I have a box at home that I use for hospital visitations and such. It should last me until I retire (with no change in "flavor").

Sometimes we use a loaf of bread instead of wafers. Since we serve by intinction, people just tear off as much as they like and dip it in the wine. There have been a couple times that I've stood there thinking "Um, if everyone took a chunk that size there wouldn't be any left." I'm sure that's a metaphor for something. :D

I don't take communion in churches where grape juice is used. It is loaded with sugar and can be fatal for a diabetic. I always purchased communion wine at the local Liquor Store......sugar-free variety.

Also used an unleavened wafer.

Cheers,

Jim

My church has never to my knowledge had the Lords supper with anything other than what they always use. As a matter of fact, I've never attended a church that ran out of the little crackers that I've always seen. And I've never been to a church that used anything other than grape juice either.

Would be nice if they used bread and wine like in the Bible...but I've never seen it done that way.

I don't think "the right sacraments" have anything to do with it. I think Jesus meant, "Whenever you eat together, remember me." The church potluck is closer to communion than "The Lord's Supper", as far as I'm concerned, and ought to be undertaken much more reverently than is usual. In this I'm closer to the Quakers than to most Baptists, Protestants or Episcopalians.

Since I'm alcoholic, I'm grateful for the Baptist tradition of Welch's grape juice. I tried to take communion at a Finnish Lutheran church one time, and when the fumes got in my nose I sneezed and splattered the port all over the priest (he was understanding).
