Can anyone out there recommend a good overhead choir mic. I am looking at the audio technica 853. We have a small choir.

You got the best one, IMO. Just space them right and hang them right.

Are you using the mic(s) for sound reinforcement or for recording purposes? I have used the Tony Faulkner of England method of spacing 2 mics 27" apart with a slight toe outward. If you are in stereo configuration try a hard pan left and right for each mic and adjust inward with the pan controls as to your liking. This spacing eliminated some of the phase problems of wide spaced mics and sound arrival time differences. The two mic approach gives a nice sense of space and natural reverb tails from the acoustics of the room.

The other issue is the self noise of the mics themselves. Distant micing requires low self noise. The affordable Rode N1A $299 ea) at 5db of self noise. This is lower than many high end Neumans or AKG 414's that are to die for. With its large 1" diaphram it captures it all for sure.

You will also discover just how noisy your HVAC system is in your sanctuary. Some are so bad you would think you are recording in an airplane hanger. I try to turn them off when recording if possible.

If you want to enjoy some nice distant mic'd music go to www.stereophile.com and order the Cantus CD "Comfort and Joy" or the K622 Clarinet recording done by Mr. Tony Faulkner. They are both state of the recording art. K622 is also the hi-rez SACD DSD format on a dual layer disc with the standard CD redbook format there as well. Enjoy.

So, Jim, you don't recommend the Radioshack All-in-one wireless handheld? [IMG]

No, used for live choir performance. Sounded great sunday. It supposed to be one of the best overhead choir mics you can get for the money.
    It was $214 retail $299.

We do have a Radio shack lapel wireless that works pretty good.
Some of radio shacks mics are made by either shure or audio techinca.
My dad is into sound and bought several radio shack mics that supposed to be one of the real good drum mic guts but with cheaper outside plastics, etc...

    Gib,

The Radio Shack is fine...for the shower...the hand held is preferred as the lapel is somewhat painful in the shower. LOL

Choir mics don't make the choir sound better. They just sound bad, louder. :D

Ah... but the blue haired ladies can then hear themselves, eh Gib?

Our church finally seems to have overcome 'feedback' but Pastor Rick hears an echo when he preaches.
