Christ Betrothed To His Church

Song of Solomon 3:11 Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of heart.

Go forth, O Zion's daughters, virgin souls,
Go forth from creatures, and created good -
From frames and feelings - from thy dungeon self,
And from the empty toys which please the world;
View Jesus’ exaltation on His throne.

Behold king Solomon! the Christ of God,
The chiefest of ten thousand - Lord of all -
The King of saints - with matchless glory crown’d,
In His espousals with His queen, His Church,
The admiration of the heav’nly world.

E’er time began, His sov’reign grace and love
Betroth’d His Church, espous’d her cause, and gave
His cov’nant bond of truth, and faithfulness,
That He and His should be for ever one;
A mystic body, and a mystic head.

Yea, more, in that espousal, Jesus made
Himself responsible for all the debts,
And all the cares and comforts of His church;
Nor could He break His bond, nor slight His troth,
Though she became deprav’d in Adam's fall,
His heart was glad on His espousing day -
The joy was set before Him then, for which,
In after days, His soul endured the curse -
The shame - the wrath and vengeance she deserv’d.

His mother, the Jerusalem above, (Galatians 4:26)
Crown’d Him as mediator - King of grace -
With sov’reignty most absolute and full;
While God the Father gave into His hand
The sceptre of eternal righteousness, (Hebrews 1:8)
To rule in Zion, and control all worlds.

The crown of His essential Deity,
From everlasting He had claim’d, and worn,
But His espousals crown’d Him yet again,
As cov’nant head of all the chosen race -
Invested with all pow’r in heav’n and earth,
To give eternal life to His elect.

Go forth, O Zion's daughters, look again,
Behold King Jesus crown’d, by precious souls;
When gospel proclamations of His love,
Applied by pow’r divine, bring multitudes
To touch His sceptre top - adore His name,
And put salvation's crown upon His head.

Go forth again, behold king Solomon,
Upon His marriage day - that glorious day,
When His espoused wife - His ransom’d church,
Made ready by His Spirit for Himself,
Shall gain the consummation of her bliss;
The day of gladness to the Bridegroom's heart,
When He shall see the travail of His soul -
Embrace the object of His ancient love -
And by ten thousand times ten thousand tongues,
Be crown’d, with hallelujahs, LORD OF ALL!
