    (Orlando, Florida-AP) -- A conservative Christian
organization wants the no-fly zone over Walt Disney World to be
removed so it can fly banners touting an anti-homosexuality Web
site over a gay festival this week.
The Virginia-based Family Policy Network claims the no-fly
zone infringes upon its right to preach freely during the Gay
    Days celebration.
The group hopes to include, as part of its outreach, planes
pulling banners reading: "JESUS CHRIST: HOPE FOR
    HOMOSEXUALS.COM."
The 13th annual Gay Days celebration, which starts Thursday
and lasts four days, is expected to draw more than 100-thousand
    gay and lesbian tourists.
The airspace above Disney World has been free of aircraft
since March, when the government said the resort was a potential
    terrorism target.
A lawsuit by the Family Policy Network and an aerial
advertising company is seeking a temporary rollback of the
    restrictions.

Sounds to me like they want "special rights" for their group.

If I recall, the no fly zone was put into place as a matter of national security (The theme parks in my area, which include Disneyland, Knotts, CA Adventure, etc, also have no fly zones). As a matter of national security, I don't think the ban should be lifted. It's not a matter of what event is going on, and who wants to fly the banner, it's a matter of keeping the area secure for those in the resort. If the no fly zone were never in place, I'd be saying, "hey it's free speach, fly what you like, so long as it's legal".

Also, as a side note, the Gay Days celebration is not affiliated with the Walt Disney Co in any way. They're an organization that rents business space from the hotels and conference centers via agents, like tons of other individuals and, businesses, and organizations do throughout the year. Personally, I don't hold the WD company responsible for the actions of those who patronize it.

I am curious if disney would be just as
unaffiliated with a christian or pro life group that sought to publicize a week at disney named for their cause.

Speaking just as an observer who frequents the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim somewhat frequently, there have been numerous church based events at the Disneyland Resort that I've been witness to, though have never attended. Several of them have been of quite a large scale. My own daughter recently attended an event called "Christian School Days", where midle school aged children in the area attended a retreat-type all nighter of fellowship, followed by a day at Disneyland. Another denomination recently held their annual convention at the Disneyland Resort for an entire week, which ended with a day in one of the parks, and a night at an Angels game. One of more well known events is actually ongoing year round: The House of Blues at Downtown Disney has Sunday worship and Sunday brunch, with a different Gospel singer each week.

Of course, these events are less newsworthy and rarely receive major press.

I think the word "Christian" should be put in quotes in the title of this thread, but I'm sure they mean well. If only they'd use the money they would spend on that airplane to do something worthwhile.

Murph, do you argue for special rights just because you are a Christian? That would sort of, um, betray principles that Baptists have stood by for years.

Yes, they do have the right to believe wrong.

They actually create events for church goers, like "Night of Joy," which they don't do for Gay Day.

Russ, happily that horse manure hasn't gotten here (Western Kentucky). If it did, there would be a lot of vacancies to fill--students, teachers, etc. As it is, we are losing a fully-certified math teacher to the local Christian high school (she is taking a huge cut in pay).

Compared to other places, however, things are not bad. I still teach a unit entitled, "The Judeo-Christian Ethic, the Basis for American Law," in my high school Government and AP Government classes.

Yes, I've gone off topic. I will start another thread in the general baptist discussion section. Sorry.

Hmmm....I have a suggestion....instead of spending money to fly banners (BIG waste of resources), why doesn't the group make an attempt to reach out in love and respect for homosexuals them as Jesus would. I realize most Christian groups don't take Jesus seriously when He says love your neighbor...maybe it is time we started to act like Christians instead of the moral authority. Let's encourage people to seek Christ and leave the homosexuality issue for Him to deal with.

I agree we ought to reach out to all sinners. And we ought to treat all sin equally. So, we can forget the gay issue when we forget the adultery issue, the extortionist issue, the murder issue, the fornicator issue, the idolatry issue, the drunkard issue, the perjurer issue, the liar issue, etc. None of these groups should have a "rights organization" standing up to affirm them in their sin. We should forgive, and then echo our Lord--"Go, and sin no more."

1 Cor 6:9-11 "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God."

1 Tim 1:9-10 "knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine,"
