Instead of denying that they are Christian, we should acknowledge that Christians do sinful and violent things, denounce those actions as not being representative of us or our religion, extend our condolences to any victims, ask for grace and understanding from those affected and live lives that show others we mean it.

That is what we would like muslims to say in response to muslim terrorism, right?

But it's so much easier just to dismiss them with a "they're not really Christians". [IMG]

Beliefs make Christians, Muslims and Jainists, not actions. There are good, bad and indifferent in every religion.

So these Nigerians are all blood bought, born again, Spirit filled Christians? They are no more Christian than the atheistic, Marxist, IRA men who were buried by the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. Being Christened, confirmed, baptized or pasteurised doesn't make you a Christian - being born again does, and if any man be in Christ Jesus he is a new creature.

    Amen! Amen! and Amen!

Just because they are saved does not mean they are permitting themselves to be led by the Holy Spirit, nor does it mean that they will behave properly. There are many, many lawless Christians in this sin-filled world.

Onitsha, the city at the centre of this report, happens to have been "missionised" in the mid 1800's and is predominantly Anglican. The report uses the word "Christian" in the broadest possible sense. These are not devout believers, they are nominal Anglicans, no doubt.

    DavidsonBap,

Your own post betrays your title !

Look into one of the excerpts from there:

<<Saturday's protest over the cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in Maiduguri marked the first violent demonstrations over the issue in Nigeria. Police say at least 18 people, most of them Christians, died then, and 30 churches were burned down . The Christian Association of Nigeria said at least 50 people were killed in the violence.>>

Question is whether all christians should become martyrs when the Muslim plunder them and kill them. This raise the question about the difference between State and Individual, especially when the government is too incompetent to protect their own people.
This leads us to a certain agony.

    DavidsonBap,
Are you ready to be killed by the brutal robbers when they burst into your home but you have a chance to defend yourself by killing them?

This is what I don't understand. He posts' this and then another thread saying the reason people have a problem with the Bush port issue is because some of them are bigots against the muslims. I'm starting to wonder what the agenda is with him. I am not jumping to conclusions, just a bit confused. Great post Eliyahu. I don't yet think he is against Christians, but a couple threads saying Christians are killers and people who are against Bush on one issue are Bigots just have me a bit confused.

    two other thoughts as well...

"Christian" is a term often used to delineate from "muslim." I doubt that the AP is defining "Christian" as we would. In this context, when one sees "Christian" one should read "non-Muslim."

Also, I also question the motive of the OP. Is your point that "Christians" are as violent as Muslims? Good luck making that one float...if your point is that "Christians" (once again, we're using a media definition here) aren't perfect...well, no surprise.

I understand. In general this is quite difficult issue in practicing our faith. In a certain sense, the intention of OP title might have been to attract the people with such title, but sometimes it can mislead too much.

Of course, there have been controversies over whether Christians should raise the guns when they are available, or they should just endure and accept the torturing and murdering even though they could struggle against the evil powers.
My discernment so far is to distinguish between State and Individual and that Individual must work on the principle of Love Your Enemy, while Government should exercise her due dilligence in practicing and effecting the Justice for her people as a Shadow of God's Judgment until He comes.
The problem is in the middle state, between State and Individual, which means Riot and Civil war etc, which is yet to be governmental issue, from individual issue. I could understand some agony at the time of independence of USA from British Empire, of the people called Loyalists who came to Canada eventually.

Going back to Nigeria, I met a Nigerian lady who was a busines woman, Christian in an airplane. In the discussion I could understand her faith in depth. We cannot say that the most Nigerian Christians are fake believers.
So, we should rather be careful in condemning the other Christians in such difficult situation. They must have known about the atrocities performed by Muslims elsewhere, and remember well that Muslims killed so many girl students at the Christian schools in the past few years too. Do they have to tolerate yet or shall they better defend against the mob? that might be the questions to them. One thing which is clear is that U.S. government doesn't do any significant measures to the Christians( or so-called Christians) in Darfur, Sudan, while they are tortured and raped, plundered, and killed.
These are not the only cases, since we know about Ambon Island in Indonesia, Rwanda case where millions were killed. Would God protect them miraculously? or Does God want us to do for our protection as long as we can? History shows us no miracle in those cases. Should they tolerate those incidents as the punishment by God because they were not faithful enough? Are we enjoying the peace because we are far more sincere in our faith than those are?

Apparently this type of mobs, civil war, riot are in the middle of Government and Individual and need some more thoughts and it drives me into the agony.

Thats an interesting question, what did the Lord say?

    Matthew 5:38-39
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Should Christians be forming vigilante mobs and getting revenge on Muslim 'terrorists'? I don't believe so. Should they protect themselves if their home is invaded? I don't know...

A couple of threads that should be discussing people calling themselves Christians committing heinous acts and LadyEagle uses them to continue her Muslim bashing.

    Amazing!
