Please do not turm this into a discussion of whetther we should celebrate Christmas or not!!!!!!!!!!!

Do any of your churches celebrate the season of Advent along with Christmas?

I have personally found Advent a very meaningful experience that aids in focussing on the miracle of Christ's birth.

We publish a devotional guide written by members (The scripture passages are assigned by the pastor). There is a daily devotional written from the First Sunday of Advent through Christmas day.

In each service of the four weeks of Advent we have a family read a scripture passage and light a candle in the Advent wreath with the fifth candle, the Christ candle, being lit on Christmas day or Christmas Sunday (the Sunday following Christmas.

Other worship times include a "Hanging of the Green" service where we teach the Christian symbolism found in the decorations we use in our churches and homes, through singing and scripture.

There is also a musical presenrtation by the Adult Choir. Our people are encouraged to take advantage of the musical and dramatic offerings at other churches in the community, if they do not interfere with our own.

Christmas Eve is a silent celebration of the Lord's Supper with our families.

This year, I'll be leading a "Top 10 CHristmas Carol Sing." I'll begin accepting "votes" next Sunday and tally the results. The choices are, of course, limited to what is in our hymnal. As I prepare to lead this service on a Sunday night, I'll dig into the background of the writing, the composer, the scriptural basis, etc of each of these carols. This is a really cool service. (I've also done this with hymns in general.) Which do you think will be #1?

Since Christmas is on a Sunday, we will have one very informal service.

Thanks for your response. I hope to gather more ideas to help make this season more meaningful.

To those who believe, Have a blessed and merry Christmas!!!

    Tim

How does Advent work this year? 4 weeks before Christmas (25th) would start:
    Nov 26
    Dec 04
    Dec 11
    Dec 18

We've done Advent in a couple churches along with the candles. Very special time each week, with involvement of many folks in the church.

We have done, and are doing advent this year also. Dr. Bob, the 5th Sunday falls on Christmas this year. My two sons have the privelege of lighting the Christ candle this year.

For the past few years we have had the Hanging of the greens service but decided to not do it this year. No interest.

Instead we are doing something different. We are transforming our church property into the town of Bethlehem and giving tours to the public.
It's called Bethlehem Boulavard. I get to play the part of census taker.
