I am watching a show on TLC - about Excessive Christmas lights.

There is one story, where a man has some 250,000 lights with 6 miles of extension cords.

One man said he spends over 150 hours putting up his dispay

Since this is almost a professional display - hundreds of cars drive by.

A neighbor has went to the town council requesting a law be passed restricting the amount of lights and the length of time - (past Christmas) the lights may be on.

So who has more rights - the man with the large display, or the neighbor who wants peace and quiet, not to mention the distraction of the display lighting up the entire neighbored.

So if you were on the town council what would you do?

I'm on two sides of this.

One side says that he has a right to do what he wants on his own property.

Another side says that it creates an attractive nuisance and should be limited to the day after Thanksgiving to January 2nd.

IMO this is the only side in this discussion. It is his property, he has the right to do with it as he pleases.

Boy this could really take a nasty twist -just let your imagination go wild.

Keep in mind that your right to swing your fist ENDS where my nose begins.

If the affect of it only stopped at his property, then there would be no discussion. However, having traffic tying up the road, possibly causing so much light in the neighbor's home to now allow sleep and things like that make it a neighborhood issue. I've been to some of those homes where there is a crowd looking at the amazingly decorated house - with singing Santas and musical reindeer. It's definitely a nuisance to the neighbors.
