Chrysler Rolls Out SUV After Government Scolding

New York (AP) - Just a week after the White House scolded Chrysler LLC for relying too much on gas guzzlers, the company is heading to a marquee auto show Wednesday to unveil a new SUV.

Chrysler insists the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which clocks in at 20 mpg in its two-wheel-drive version and 19 in four-wheel-drive, is a crowd favorite and a crucial part of its lineup.

"This is a very important vehicle for us. It's one of the primary legs of the Chrysler stool," Chrysler spokesman Rick Deneau said. "Customers have told us they want this vehicle and that it's the right size."

GM has not been relying on the "SUV" it has been relying on the demand for the SUV. There is a distinct difference. The first intentionally leaves out the public demand and lays the so called blame on the car maker. But the second shows that the general public wants them. That reality also makes it difficult to demonize the car maker. And of course libbies need to take the focus off of the true driving force behind the SUV to effect the change they want. Such dishonesty is always part of libbies agenda. Reality hurts their cause.

As a family of 6, we need a larger car. Right now we have 2 cars - a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan and a 1999 Nissan Maxima. Oh - I forgot my daughter's 2003 Honda Accord. Anyway, when the Caravan is in the shop, we all cannot fit in the other cars we own - we NEED a larger car. The Grand Cherokee is a nice sized SUV - certainly not a Suburban or Excursion! I don't see the issue. Not everyone can deal with a Smart car or a Prius.

Why build an AT that runs? Then it wouldn't work well with the engine that doesn't run.

Actually, my transmission has been fine. It's been for electrical stuff and one recall (a steering issue). It's going to have to go in this week for an inspection too. But my old Caravan had tranny issues and so we turned it in at the end of the lease.

Once the government is done with taking over the automobile manufacturing industry and they are dictating that only tiny under powered rubberband wind-up cars are to be built... we will start to look a little like Cuba with everyone holding on to their old out of production cars because once they are gone we won't be able to replace them.

Ditto. We have 5 children and one on the way. Once the new baby arrives our Yukon XL will be packed. A mini-van is too small for us.

No money to go anywhere, buy anything, or save.

All anyone's salary will do is feed the mighty monster, with him allowing you to keep just enough (by his standard) to survive; barely!

You'll also be taxed through the nose if you buy the "wrong" vehicle.

Don't be too surprised if the too many kids for a minivan issue is resolved not by building cars to carry kids... but instead is handled by punishing parents with "too many" kids to discourage having more kids.

The imperious Obama is not going to be happy with Chrysler.

He will eventually bring the wrath of...his wrath down on Chrysler. They hve made a business decision, not an ideological one, and he's not going to like it. :thumbs:

My dad owned a few Chrysler products and I've owned one. Never had any problems other than those that one might have from other makes and I've owned a few of those too over the years.

The Grand Cherokee is one of Chrysler's best-sellers and not a product they can afford to discontinue. The new one looks good. It gets better gas mileage than the model it replaces while being more powerful. It is a sister car to the Mercedes sUV of the same size as it was developed when Mercedes owned Chrysler. If gasoline stays under $3, this product should be successful for Chrysler. If Chrysler is forced to go into bankruptcy and liquidation, the Jeep brand will be sold off and will continue as a viable product. And this Grand Cherokee will be a prized jewel by whatever entity winds up with Jeep. I sell Subarus for a living. Right now, not many customers are comparing our products with Jeep when they cross-shop. I expect this new Grand Cherokee to be an object for comparison when it comes out.

This is what I am thinking...

This is the dumbest thing Chrysler could have done...
For these reasons....

1).. Although Chrysler says there is a demand for SUVs... I don't see it in real life... I see the opposite...
Conservatives are getting rid of SUVs to save money on gas.
Libs are getting rid of SUVs to go green.

2) .. Chrysler should be looking toward the future, and although I disagree with "man made global warming" it seems all companies are "green advertising".. because the consensus of the public is that it is morally right to be green.. (in part to a successuful media blitz by the left) And although I am not falling for it.. the lemmings will... and we can see by the last election, people in general don't do research, they just do what the media says.

This just proves my assertion that Chrysler should go bankrupt, move out of the way, and make room for smarter car makers.

The people I know (conservatives) who own Jeeps, including our family, have no intention of getting rid of them and prefer them to other SUVs. Other SUV owners I know have no intention of getting rid of theirs, either.
